Magi-nation: Great card game, or the GREATEST card game?

http://www.magi-nation.com/magi-nation/

Magi-nation was a card game full of Awesome that is making a comeback sometime this upcoming year. It was like Magic, except with better balance and mechanics, and was simpler, to prevent the "Rules Lawyering" that ruined MTG for me.

I've still got a box full of magi-nation cards, even though I got rid of magic long ago.

That is because Magi-Nation ended up being such a better game than Magic. especially the MTG of today.... Ugh.

I was really gung-ho for Magi-Nation roughly two years ago. The local gaming store had cards, and the owner was pretty into it himself. Unfortunately, it was only myself and maybe four other guys who played regularly. Most other people were all over the Dragonball Z card game.

I want Magi-Nation to come back so hard.

I bought this right when it came out, played it for a while. We slowly realized the underground-guy deck I was building was completely unstoppable. Looking it up online, we found that was the top tournament deck, and had some crazy infinate combo.

We had flashbacks to Magic and 'the power nine,' all the crazy stuff that was broken in the first set, and stopped playing.

But the artwork and style of the cards was awesome.

If MN was > MTG, why is MTG still alive and MN is dead?

Because for some reason, even with it's fucking retarded new mechanics, there are still a lot of crazy people ready to dole out hard earned cash for MTG.

All I know about Magi-Nation is that there was a GBC game I played for like, an hour, and yet I still feel the awesome.

A buddy of mine plays this at a comic shop. He seems pretty into it.

I don't know the first thing about it except that it's done with.

Yeah, I was talking to Phil about this, who was one of the guys who designed it, used to play at my local card shop. They've been working towards getting an animated series started for 3 or 4 years now, so it was good to hear its moving fowards.

    Also, Bograth 4 Life.

    Except they nerfed poor Moob.

I used to in house playtest this game for Interactive Imagination. The game is great as long as you arent trying to break it. But it doesnt take much trying to find broken combos. With the plethora of errata out there for the game good luck figuring out what your cards actually do.

When last I checked, Magic cards only got errata to bring them up to date with modern wordings and such or in one case to make the card do what it was actually supposed to do in the first place. Therefore you can normally rely on the text that's, you know, on the card to tell you what it does. This is in stark contrast to MN where all sorts of cards have been erratta'd to have extra restrictions on their use or what have you.

As for overpowered combos, it's pretty much all in the eye of the beholder. If you're talking about games where you can use any card then yeah, Magic is going to be full of crazy broken shit because it's been going for so long now that stuff like that is unnavoidable, it's simple enough to just play by the Legacy banned list. As far as I'm aware, the only time an actual properly supported tournament format has been completely and blatantly broken was the Urza block and that got dealt with quite quickly. The only thing even close to that that's happened since was Ravfinity in Mirrodin block standard and there were still at least three tournament viable decks then.

When it comes down to it, in the end, it's the same as with tiers in fighting games. No game with a sufficient amount of depth is going to be completely balanced, as long as there are a few viable options that's good enough.

Hopefully the old cards will still be allowed. I want to play Bograth from the get go.

None of the other regions really grabbed me, other than maybe Arderial.

I wuld imagine the older cards will still be legal.

I'll still be playing my Core deck reguardless.

Heck, II still prints card packs and shit for Cardhaus, If ya wants some packs or buy Promo's you never got a chance to earn with Animite or something, check it out.

I'm debating between buying either the Dark Twins or Korg&Zet.

Dark Twins/Eidon is where its at. Unless youre playing me then you want to play the deck that lets you fetch copies of Power of the Creators (speaking of cards that were banned in our tournaments).

My current Magi Order is Warrada (Getting her ring out early game for the draw power is a huge plus.) Harror (She gets to start with a Cataclysm, <3) and Morag (Morag's Gift, anyone?) and so far the decks worked great for me.

I have two of those. I hope his name is still in the rulebook for the new sets.

I always wanted to make a Naroom Cald deck around the dual region magi.

I doubt my name will appear in the rulebook for the new sets as I have had nothing to do with them. In fact, I may not appear in the most recent one as it is. I waso only in 2 as a playtester, the set with bograth/paradwyn and the set with d'resh/nar. If there was a set after that then Im out.

So, I actually played this on Friday (a buddy of mine took me along to meet his league folks.)

I didn't find it enjoyable at all - it was the book keeping on every single card that drove me mad.

I just kept a bag full of tiny six sided dice on hand when I played, its not so bad if you do that.
