is there any way to transfer game saves and dlc between two 360's (each with own hd) without buying that official xbox 360 system link cable? would running a regular ethernet cord between the two allow me to do this?

Are you looking to move content just the once? If so, and if the content is less than 512MB you might have good luck with an MU. Otherwise you could just transfer the license using xbox.com.

i haven't checked the total amount of data file size-wise. i recently got my own 360 (since all my roomie ever wants to do is watch the nba finals play nba 2k9 and then go to sleep) and i have recovered my gamertag and now i need my game saves (from when my profile was on his 360's hd) moved. the dlc, mostly rb songs, i have already made the license switch so those i was just hoping to avoid redownloading.

If you pick up (or could just borrow) an MU that would work. I tend to just save straight to my MU. There might be a game or two out there that insist on saving to an HDD, but I can't think of one off the top of my head.

The only way you will be able to move files between hard-drives without the data transfer cable (which would completely format the other HD anyway) is to use a memory unit. You may, however, be SOL as many games, in my experience, will not allow you to copy save files from an HD to an MU and vice versa. Probably something to do with gamesave loading that was popular in the early days of the 360.

You're better off just re-downloading the DLC.
