Liteon DVD burner?

I'm thinking of getting my mom a DVD burner for x-mas to go along with her new computer (which surprisingly didn't come with one).

I've narrowed it down to 2 similarly priced drives. One is an LG, which is a brand I've had good experiences in the past with (CD burners, anyways), the other is a Liteon, which is a brand I've never heard of.

The primary difference between the two is the Liteon drive supports LightScribe, which I am not a big fan of, but I know mom would like it.

So how about it? Are Liteon burners any good? Are LG DVD burners good, for that matter? I can't decide if I should take the risk with Liteon just to have LightScribe capability.

I have a Lite-On. Had it for about 9 months. I only use it lightly (probably burned 20 CDs, and 30 or so DVDs in that time), but I've found it to work quite well, and be really dependable.

I don't have any hard facts or whatever for you, but i can tell you this...

I've had a Liteon for nearly a year now and it's been the best writer i've had, my others were samsung and an LG (that one was a long time ago).

It's fast and quiet, very good for the low price tag.

    i'm very happy with mine!

I've heard a lot of good things about Lite-On burners. If I recall, they're one of those deals where they used to make the burners for other companies, then decided to go out on their own and sell them themselves.

I have had good experiences with Lite-On drives too. They arnt even that new of a company. I got a CD burner from them 5 or 6 years ago. Was a good drive.

I still have a Lite-On burner I bought four years ago. Works as well now as it did when I bought it.

Although I've only heard good things about LiteOn, I've personally only ever owned LG drives, and I've yet to have one die. So to be honest, you'll probably be happy no matter what.

One other thing I have heard though, is that the LightScribe system tends to be somewhat unreliable, the discs can cost a bit more than regular ones, and on some burners the scribed text is borderline unreadable. Some food for thought, anyway.

Honestly though, now that I think about it, I have never known anyone that had a CD/DVD burner die on them. I would personally focus on the features you want more than the brand. But that's just me.
