Rather simple question, I guess. I'm looking for webcomics that aren't the typical geek/video-game humor. I want something with a bit more substance, an actual story, updated routinely and, if at all possible, good art to boot.
Anyone got any suggestions? If you need an example of something I'm looking for 'Zombie Hunters' is a great comic that fulfills my prerequisites. Something cool, maybe a bit dark that draws you in fast. It can be "real life", sci-fi, fantasy, alternate reality...whatever, I'm pretty open. Just something that isn't always three panels with a punchline at the end.
Neither of them are as good as TZH, and I don't necessarily think TZH is particularly good; more interesting than entertaining thanks to its takes on zombie types and science. It's too slow paced and updates far too infrequently because of that, at just 1 page a week, IMOH.
updates once a week, which is kind of slow i guess but at least its regular!
its got a bit of an archive too which is a good use of an hour
Fletcher here speaks the truth; The Abominable Charles Christopher is easily one of the best webcomics I've read. I wish it updated more frequently, but the art is consistently great and the author is telling a very interesting story, so I think it's worth the tradeoff.
You may or may not enjoy Order Of The Stick. The strip starts off mainly with Dungeons & Dragons game-mechanics based humor, but Rich Burlew finds a substantial plot very quickly, and the story that develops ends up being stunningly deep. While the artwork may not fit a convential definition of "good", it is most certainly clever.

Still has alot of D&D jokes here and there though. So if you don't play or have played the game, it may not be as funny for you. Just saying.
Edit: And what was that one comic (I think its officially dead now) concerning multiple factions of generic soldiers? They were all stuck in a city and were fighting each other for some reason they couldn't remember, parodying multi player FPS's? The protagonists were of the red faction if I remember, and they all wore gas masks or something...

'Fuck yeah, me too. What little kid ever pretended to be part of the lynch-mob?'

I like Menage a 3. It's 3 times a week updated, art is nice. I don't know if I'd say it was funny though. I smile sometimes when I read it but mostly, I'm there to see what happens to the characters. I also like Goblins but that gets heavily dramatic real quick.
Not a weekly comic, but awhile ago someone pointed me in the direction of Rice Boy. Sort of a fantasy graphic novella, I guess would be a good description. I sat down and read the entirety of it in a couple of hours, and really enjoyed it.
In my opinion, Anders Loves Maria is pretty great. But, I can see why not everyone would be into it.
Here's a link to the first one...it needs to be read in order. The art starts off pretty good, but it gets better. She also does a lot of hand inked and watercolored comics which is cool.
There was one I lost track of, called Synchronicity or something like that. It had a gimmick where it was two stories being told I think in parallel worlds or in the past or something, and you'd flip between them by a single item being in both stories.
I've read a lot of these at one point or another - the humor ones anyway (softerworld, Dr. Mcninja, SMBC...couple others), but I'm looking for more "serious" webcomics. Online graphic novel-isque. Deadwinter and Everday Decay at the beginning were great. Minus is up there. I would like more things like that.
While not outside of the fantasy /video-game humor D&D element LFG is progressing with a degree of plot. It started off as a jab at MMORPG's with a degree of dark humor but that has begun to be replaced by a more serious plot development. I really enjoy reading it and it has Richard.
It's in full A4 color and is updated two times a week and is counting at 9 issues with around 30 pages in each one.

I was toying with the idea of mentioning this, I really like this comic. Questionable content is in a similar vain and updates every weekday, the artwork is pretty good these days too.

I really thought this went down the drain when i stopped reading it a few months ago... Something big was happening and a absolutely couldn't care what was going on exactly...
It's a bit of a fable that mixes some mystery with humour and quite possibly at times the best art i've seen on any (web) comic.
I actually started reading this today and it's absolutely superb. And i'll put another vote in the minus box while i'm here.
Wapsi square is also a pretty good comic in terms of story/characters, until it kind of breaks down into a paranormal-emo crisis, but it's a good read up until then.
I also used to read Zap! In Space, a sci-fi graphic novel about "space captain Zap Vexler, captain of the starship Excelsior, and his crew". The art starts off mediocre but gets ALOT better, and the story is pretty engaging too. The only reason I stopped reading because i'm too impatient for weekly updates, there is a big archive to work through now though.

The first 10 pages or so are just bitching about CAD, but from there on out it touches on pretty much every good webcomic out there at some point.

They do have ongoing narratives, however.

daisy owl has all of the things he is looking for. The story is a little loose at times, but I didn't realize we were being graded.

I'd never read FreakAngels before seeing this thread. So far it's actually pretty great.
