Do they bill your paypal, or do you manually issue them a payment every month?

The worst they could do if you just stopped paying would be to put a hit on your credit report, which is something you really don't want.

Send your story to The Consumerist? That, or try contacting the BBB about it.
As far as numbers go, the only one I could find was from a WHOIS, 1.5147455957. Not sure if you'd be able to contact them through that, but I suppose it's worth a shot. They also have live support available from their main page, but I'm not sure if that's just tech support or whether they'd be able to handle billing from that.

I can't help with your current service provider problem, but as for recommendations for a new webhost, I am thoroughly impressed with http://www.dreamhost.com Cheap prices, very good deals, excellent support, easy to use and I've never heard of anyone having any problems with them.

Keep records of all your correspondence with them (including names, dates, times, etc.), ask reps to be as specific as possible about what the next step is and when they expect it to happen, be as specific as possible when you correspond with them, and ask to be referred to a supervisor if someone can't help you.

There's no need to be a dick about any of the above, and you're more likely to get someone going a little above and beyond their pay grade if you remain polite about everything. If you can't get anywhere and they try to dun you, though, having your cancellation order and all your supporting communications at hand will let you shut down any attempts at collection on fees you don't owe much more easily.

    Rogue helicopter?
Ecoterrorism is actually the single largest terrorist threat at the moment. They don't usually kill people, but they blow up or set on fire very expensive things.

What kind of usage are you seeing currently? How much disk space do you need, what are your bandwidth needs, etc? These are the important questions when you're looking for hosting.

We host with ASmallOrange, which is a smallish host located in Atlanta, GA. They may seem a little more expensive than the Dreamhosts or 1&1s of the world, but this is mainly due to the fact that they barely oversell their hosting. This means that you're not going to get emails saying "Hey, you're using too many CPU-minutes", like you might see from Dreamhost. Their average server load is also low (ours usually averages around 1.6-1.9) and the usual page response time is pretty quick. God, I sound like a plant...sorry guys.

No, you don't sound like a plant but really, Dreamhost aren't like that. The service has never been anything but fast and efficient, and our sites are sometimes very busy (for smallish sites). When they say 2TB of bandwidth and 200 gig of hosting they mean exactly that.

On the rare occasion that they've gone down or been attacked, they're very good at keeping you updated and informed and usually have the sites back online within a few minutes.

I recommend them mainly because they're a very ethical company. They actually worked to expose how they (and webhosts in general) were offered good reviews and advertising in exchange for bribes. They typically don't appear on 'top 20 webhost!' sites for this very reason.

I use IX Webhosting, and I'm running on the 2nd year now. I've used customer support once or twice (questions, nothing having to do with a problem) and i got very prompt, accurate replies.

I use the cheapest (I have no requirement for anything beyond that) and it's $3.95/month.

    Host 2 Domains
    Disk Storage - 100 GB
    1 Free Domain Regs
    2 Dedicated IP Addresses
    Data Transfer - 1,000 GB
    Sub Domains - 100
    etc etc

The next grade up offers MySQL, and that's $6.45/month.

They've got a comparison-thing for a lot of competitors, and it looks like they beat out 1 and 1.

I've looked all around the net for a better deal and I haven't really been able to find one. I don't need half of the benefits they offer, but it looks like you could use them. I highly reccomend them. :D
