Lookin' to buy a 360 JRPG, help me out here

So, after playing through and loving both Mass Effect and Fallout 3, I realized that I haven't played a single JRPG this gen. I've considered Lost Odyssey, but it looks so cookie-cutter that I don't know if could stomach it. Any suggestions?

Eternal Sonota is a blast. So is the Tales game. Lost Oddesy is your FF13a type game. If you want a FF type JRPG that is your game so far. Star Ocean is pretty good too. I would put it just below the other games I listed. If you want a nice little break pick up Fable 2. It is a game you just take your time with.

Do you want something Final Fantasy-ish, or Dragon Quest-ish?

    Final Fantasy -> Lost Odyssey
    Dragon Quest -> Blue Dragon

Those are really the only ones I've enjoyed on the 360.

If you like action JRPGs I've heard good things about Tales of Vesperia. If you have a PS3 Eternal Sonata is better there. And Lost Odyssey isn't worth playing. The battle system is only half-finished.

Lost Odyssey's great :), although the fourth disc is a little disappointing story-wise.

It's going really cheap nowadays, if you look around you should find copies going as low as $16.
You might also want to consider The Last Remnant or Star Ocean.

Lost Odyssey is really great until the 4th (final) disc. It's got some really heart-wrenching scenes, and I say this as someone who tends to do nothing more than chuckle at cliched JRPG sequences. The 'Thousand Years of Dreams' sequences are really, really well done.

The gameplay itself is pretty standard, but entertaining, and some of the boss battles are a lot of fun. The whole 3rd disc is absolute genius. It's a good game.

Can't speak for other JRPGs on the 360, since I haven't played them, but I have heard good things about Blue Dragon and bad things about The Last Remnant(although I've also heard that's good for the PC)

    So there you go.

With Blue Dragon I had to turn Japanese language on just to play it. The English VOs are that bad,

Tales of Vesperia is fantastic, especially if you like more active battle systems. I'd actually say it's the best JRPG out this generation.

I haven't played Blue Dragon, and thought Enchanted Arms was mediocre.

Lost Odyssey is great for a more old-school type RPG, if you're into that.

I played and thoroughly enjoyed Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, and Star Ocean 4.

I haven't played Eternal Sonata yet.

Last Remnant would have been awesome if it decided what the shit it was trying to do and got its act together. It had some kickass music though, for sure.

Enchanted Arms was hilarious. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but the scenes where they explained how to interact with different game world stuff (elevators, etc.) were amazing.

It was amusing when the main character asks how to climb a ladder. The last boss in that game was a huge difficulty jump though.

Out of all the JPGs I've seen or played, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Tales of Vesperia are the best ones to try out. I liked the Last Remnant, but it's so all over the place that I can't in good conscience suggest it. Both Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean 4 have decent to good gameplay, but the the story/characters are such tripe it's not worth th effort.

Tales of Vesperia is pretty good. Blue Dragon not so much, unless you like a pretty traditonal style.

Big AVOID for me when it comes to Last Remnant. Disaster of a game. Lost Odyssey is good and probably the nearest to an FF game at the moment. Tales of Vesperia is surprisingly fun and artistically quite pretty. Star Ocean I considered but the reviews have put me off it.

Tales of Vesperia is amazing, and definitely my recommendation unless you're averse to the active, free-run kinds of battles.

I've only just beaten the first disc of Lost Odyssey, and it's pretty good so far. Definitely isn't gripping me like ToV did, though.

I really liked The Last Remnant. It plays very similarly to Romancing SaGa, so be prepared for it to be obtuse as hell. It's also kinda difficult unless you game the level up system.

Otherwise, Tales of Vesperia is a great choice.

Thanks for the help - I'm a Final Fantasy fan so maybe I'll give Lost Odyssey a second look. Does anyone have any first-hand impressions of Star Ocean? I was excited for the game before it was released but reviews have been mixed.

Tales of Vesperia is an excellent choice as many in the thread have already pointed out.

Star Ocean 4 is a fun 25-30 hour long game with a mind meltingly bad plot. If you're looking for good gameplay Star Ocean delivers in spades (it might not be as good as Vesperia, though that is highly arguable...), but if you like good plots avoid it like the plague.

It might not be as good as Vesperia? Really? It has the single worst targetting system ever designed in a game. And there are about a fifth of the moves available. And the 1% of the time that mashing doesn't work, you'll just be blindsiding, which ALWAYS works.

Sorry i should have specified. The plot sucks and the characters are terribad, with maybe a few that are tolerable. Luckily if you skip the cutscenes the game will just give you the cliff notes version of what happened in a text box.

Maybe i just need to go back and replay it, but i don't ever remember having any problems targeting what i wanted to.

Tales of Vesperia is a great choice, if only for Yuri. Be sure to follow a guide at least loosely though, because the game is designed to prevent you from completing a lot of its optional content without following a guide... and not in a logical way too. It makes the FFXII Zodiac Spear look normal.

Also get Lost Odyssey. It's very JRPG-by-numbers, but it has very good characters, acting, music, etc. The wheels do fall off a bit towards the end (and the penultimate dungeon is truly the worst... like Tri-Ace bad), but it was a very good JRPG.

I also really liked Enchanted Arms. The game has that "so bad it's good" quality to it. I was surprised by how much I liked it. The story is so beyond dumb, and the main character is a true moron, but the combat and collection is great fun, and I actually cared at the end. Not what I was expecting :)

Blue Dragon is another good choice. The combat system is just a lot of fun, even if the story (and MaruMaruwhatever the fuck his name is) will make you bang your head against your desk/TV/cat. Best boss music ever, too!
