Resizing images in mac mail

Ok...it used to be that when I dropped an image attachment into an e-mail (using the default mac Mail program), I would get a little bar across the bottom that told me the filesize of the images and gave me a pop-up menu where I could automatically resize them.

Now I just started using a brand new 24" iMac w/ OSX 10.5.7, and that info bar does not appear. I've checked the help and can't seem to find a way to turn it on...everything seems to just assume that it's already there. Anyone know how I can get this bar to show up?

Well you're not crazy as I just tried it on my Mac (10.5.7 as well) with a PNG and the bar showed up, I tried it with a JPEG and the bar showed up. The only way I couldn't get the bar to show up is with my already small avatar image... Still trying to see if I can find more info on this for you.

EDIT: All I can find is 10.5 will not resize PDF files and already really small image files.

Hey, thanks for looking into this for me. I tried a few more files and it looks like the info bar does appear for image files (.png, .tif, .jpg) over a certain size - I guess I threw a few small files at it before so it wasn't showing up.

But the bar still doesn't appear at all for pdf files, no matter how big they are. I know for a fact that it allowed you to automatically resize pdfs before - mainly because I have an old 20" iMac sitting next to the new one which I reverted to when I couldn't automatically resize the pdfs on the new one. So maybe it's just an issue with how 10.5.7 deals with pdfs?

Well previous versions of Mail would allow you to resize PDF files, the current version does not.

Oops, guess you beat me with your edit. Well that kind of sucks...I wonder why not. I found that to be really useful for sending out proofs to a client.
