Hey guys!

I currently have a MacBook with 1 gig of ram with an intel dual core processor (2.1 GHz) and I'm running Mac OS 10.4.11. My computer has become very slow compared to when I first got it, but a buddies of mine who got the same MacBook (albeit a black one; it just has more memory) was running way faster than mine... before it puked it's guts up. :P I understand that computers do get slower over time, but mine is an extreme case. I am running several background programs (Gmail checker, Growl, and AppTrap), and no matter what my ram usage is always 50%ish. When I open programs that should be almost instantaneous, it takes a while. In general, it has become very sluggish.

What I'm getting at is this: Is there any way I can make it run faster? Bring back to, or at least close to, its glory days of first opening?

Thanks for for all your help.

First, run your system maintenance scripts. If you’re running Firefox 2.0 or 3.0 upgrade to the latest release candidate of 3.5, as the 2.x and 3.0.x versions have horrible, system crushing memory leaks. If you’re running any apps under Rosetta (old PPC apps) you have to suck it up until new versions come out. Lastly, if you can afford it, max out the RAM in your Mac. OS X is a pig, and so are many common Mac apps, so load up on RAM.

Yeah? Thanks mate. I looked into that, after I run these scripts, what should I do? Will there be anything generated by it that I should look into?

Update: I did the cleanup and it helped a little. I'm running smoother than before, but not as well as I would like. Thanks for your help!

You should reinstall OSX. I'd recommend going and getting 10.5, as it has some huge upgrades that make it worthwhile (a fast wifi menu, for instance). However, with 10.6 coming out in September, I'd recommend to wait for that.

Still, backing up everything you have and reinstalling the OS shouldn't be too difficult, and will make it as fast as new.

Just FYI, !0.6 will only cost $29 to upgrade if you have 10.5.

And do upgrade the RAM, it's cheap speed.

Does OSX get application creep like Windows OS's typically do? I haven't ever re-installed my wifes computer and am wondering if it would speed things up.

Macs are just as susceptible to "creep" as PCs. I would say more so if you want to assume that the average Mac user knows very little about disk drive maintenance and just throws tons of files on / deletes ton of files on a regular basis.

In any case, the OP needs to re-install his OS and it should be just as fast as when it was new. PC/Mac components don't "become slow" as they get older, it's the bogged down drive.
