Really? I hadn't noticed, but I guess I haven't gotten very far. I got one guy to lvl14, everyone else has died at 10 or higher. I've never had an issue with hunger yet (knock on wood). I'm usually dying with 4-6 rations on me :p .
I sacrifice all corpses to my God. All the corpses make you sick or poisoned though, right?

Only corpses whose names display in brown or green, respectively. Corpses with names in white are safe. Purple causes mutation. Red causes rot.

So thats why my ghoul started to rot and lose health. I thought that he just needed something to eat.

Great, so thats why he died. D:

No. The one thing crawl adventurers seem totally incapable of is cooking.

Mifio: Ghouls can eat rotten meat, and prefer it to non-rotten meat. The ghoul itself will start rotting if you don't eat enough, not because of eating bad meat. Also they can't become sick from eating meat that can cause sickness.

Generally speaking it's ok to eat meat that can cause sickness as you only get sick from it once in a while, I'd guess 1 in 5 or so chunks on average. This sickness goes away if you rest a bit and being sick just prevents your HP from regenerating and has a small chance of causing you to lose a couple of stat points temporarily, if any at all. Sickness causing chunks are pretty common so they'll often be your only choice other than precious non-perishable rations.

I know you can mouse over them corpse, and it tells you what it does. I guess when it say "looks unplesant and can cause sickness" or whatever, then it's technically OK to eat?
And sweet jesus I can't even get that far, my highest character is a level 7 demonspawn.

Before you think I'm too cool, I was talking in Dungeon Levels.

My best Crawl was a Mountain Dwarf Paladin. He got to char lvl10 and dungeon lvl14. He was zapped by Eustachio.
He had no business being on lvl14 I believe, as I know I ran away from a scythe wielding Sigmund and probably skipped at least one other dlevel.

My most recent best was a lvl9 Mino SW on lvl9 of the dungeon.

I dunno if this is luck or a game mechanic. I was poisoned, got down to ONE. Count it ONE hitpoint, and got better.

I was like HOLY CRAP!. I took down 5 orcs, including 2 priests, a bat and 2 snakes though :D. although I am out of potions now D:

    Agreed.

It's a shame, too, because there's some stuff in it that is criminally underutilized right now. Like the ability to have mechs transform.

The guy's currently changing the original's skill/career system in GH1 to reflect that of the second, being able to assist in the evacuation of SLC at the end while everybody else's fighting that thing, is quite a change.

Anyway, he also has a job as an ASL English teacher, and I think he's been contacted to have something published, presumably the canadian conspiracy theorist one, the japanese sure love our conspiracy theories.

I loved TOME, won a few times with that one. It had some glaring flaws though namely that race barely mattered and that the game was just too damn long.

I am saddened that more people do not know of this variant of Angband. To be fair, you can go through the game without random quests and avoiding the optional dungeons and run through it pretty fast. Races are still pretty irrelevant, though.

Does it have the same Korean-MMO-like grinding that Angband has?

Yeah it's as time consuming as Angband is. Not so muh about levels but sometimes you end up grinding endlessly for certain resistances and such you can't live without.

It breaks things up a bit with themed dungeons and more persistent levels and items than Angband though.

If you utilize game mechanics outside of the intended progession (e.g. 2 headed hydras --> 3 headed hydras --> Mature dragons), you can get a fairly high level character in under 30 minutes. Concerning items though, once I can get into Erebor, items really become a non-issue for me, especially if you can find a climbing set.

I've always had an urge to write a roguelike, or rather an ASCII game**. Either post-apocalypse RL-RPG or some sort of tactical combat game because I can't get enough of them. My brother actually finished one (MetaCollider) so maybe I'll make an effort at some point in my life.

Ever since I learned how to "read" ASCII games, it just clicks like no other graphics. I can tell very quickly all of the important things on a screen of most games with ASCII games, while with tiles I can sort of guesstimate.

Speaking of Gearhead, has anyone figured out how to get the 2d graphical version working?

I've tried myself, and it seems like you have to jump through hoops to get it running. The image file off their home-page doesn't come with any game executable, and I can't figure out what they want me to do.

The download I got from another site that's supposed to be complete just gives me an exception error when I try to run it. I suspect that i'm missing something crucial here.

I know roguelikes are supposed to be complicated, but I never imagined that just installing one would be this annoying.

Packed inside the image file is a folder named... image. It contains all the graphics used by the game, from the UI to the monsters and mecha. Drop that folder into where you installed the main executable. The two are kept separate to save on download times, IIRC.

I don't have an executable, though. There is no download for a compiled version of the game, for the graphics/SDL version. Only the ASCII version has executables as far as I can tell.

Edit: For referencing, i'm working with Gearhead 2 here, currently. I gave up on getting Gearhead 1 installed last night. Though, I still don't have an executable for that version, either.

Grab the gh-1100-sdlwin off of Sourceforge at this link.

That's the version of Gearhead that supports graphics.

Now grab the GearHead1100.image.lzh at this link.

Drop the Image folder from the .image archive into the root directory for Gearhead sdlwin, and you should be good to go.

It took me a while to get it together too.

That one is pretty fun. All your/enemy limbs have their own health and stuff. Losing a limb isn't a rare occurance. Neither is picking up said limb turning it into meteroic iron and reattaching it resulting in a massive health/strenght boost to your character.

I don't know if this'll help whatever your problem may be, but here is an informative LP from somethingawful. Also, for boulders, you can squeeze through and push it back by dropping everything on you and in your inventory, going on to the space the boulder is and go through! This is useful if you can push the boulder to a intersection so from then on you could just avoid it diagonally.

Just remember ASCII isn't obligatory with Nethack. I've used the standard graphical tileset for years.

In addition to undeinpirat's comment about boulders, don't forget to (s)earch. If you can't find the stairs down and there's a big gaping hole in your map then you can usually limit your search for hidden doors to the walls which border on the hole.
