2 things I'm having trouble with on my 360, the first being that a lot of the time I will put in a disc fresh out of the box and it'll say "Play DVD" instead of "Play game" until I push open/close on the disc tray about 20 times (Does this on non-fresh game discs too)
And secondly I can't afford to keep paying for XBL and gamefly anymore, but lo and behold, there's no 'cancel live" button like every other modern day online service has (what the hell Microsoft? This is what I get for putting up with Vista?) instant cancellation buttons have spoiled me and I have no clue where to go from here. Microsoft is the devil as far as I'm concerned right now.
Microsoft makes you jump through a ridiculous amount of hoops to cancel Live. Do not ever sign up for Live and choose to pay with your credit/debit card. Use the pre-paid cards.
If you keep an eye on deal sites, and Amazon, they often run specials where you get a 1 year Live card for 30 or 40 bucks. Use those, and just start watching out for a new one when you're down to your last 2 or 3 months of the last one.

It took me 4 minutes and for some reason I needed to be excalated to a supervisor. Everybody had an Indian accent as well. So I was all like 'wtf you saying?'

My wife started up her Xbox account while she was living in New Zealand. She tried to cancel from the US. The people who answered the US 1-800 number refused to help us because it was an international account. They referred us to the New Zealand toll free number, which you cannot call from outside New Zealand. So it was impossible to for us to call the phone number that they demanded we call. They also told us that if we called the US number, there was a menu option to speak to an international representative. We called. There was not.
The US phone monkeys refused to service an international account, and calling the international line resulted in a disconnection. I nearly closed my bank account because that was simpler than canceling Live.

That is the really really condensed version of the story. I'm leaivng out the repetitive calling back, getting placed on hold, transferred, disconnected, calling back, re-explaining the situation to the new rep, being asked to give my name/DOB/phone number/address/email address/references from neighbors/shoe size/favorite color to every goddamn rep I spoke to.
THREE HOURS.
I'll be getting a subscription card next time, assuming I ever decide to give Microsoft more money for that goddamn service.
It's about a million times easier to just call your bank and request a new credit card number than try and get your card deleted from your Live account. I think you can also go into your Live account and edit the expiration date of your card to something bogus--that way it just gets kicked back if they try to use it.

You can't, they detect that the date is invalid and force you to enter a valid one. Microsoft does not pry their lips from your money-teat that easily.

Hmm...then I think what happened was mine expired on its own and I never updated the info on Live.

They still charged me when that happened. I even got an e-mail saying that I couldn't renew my subcription because my CC info was incorrect.
Letting it expire lets you in for a whole other world of hassle, especially if you want to try and reactivate your account.
you mean the hassle of your account downgrading to Silver automatically, which you can then upgrade back to Gold anytime you want? that hassle? yeah...
OP, just get your xbox fixed for the RROD ***you just noticed***.... the replacement console will also coincidentally cure your DVD-rom issue

I mean the fact that they will attempt to take payment for a month or two, while still allowing your account Gold access, even if you haven't used it. Then, they notice, put a block on your account, not even allowing you Silver access, and won't give your account back to you unless you provide them with your CC info to pay them for the time you owe - and prepaid cards won't do that.
If you cancel through the phone what you said will happen. If you cancel the card it can snarl up pretty easily. I think darleysam and Squirminator2K have stories like this, but I might be misremembering.

If you have a recurring subscription linked to a credit card, you can't just cancel the credit card to make it go away. You will still be responsible for the recurring payments (and they will continue).
I had this problem with Planetside years ago. I signed up for a free trial, forgot about it, and started getting charged. I went and canceled through the online thing, which was a pain in the ass to find. Still, I kept getting charged.
When I spoke to Visa, I said it would be easier for me to just cancel my credit card, and the rep told me that doing so would not stop the charges--they would just keep accumulating and affect my credit rating.
I had to go in and submit a written notice to Sony to stop charging my credit card. Fucking company.

Some horror stories in this thread, but it wasn't my experience. I never owned an XBOX, but for several years I lived with people that did, so I had a Live account. I got email last summer saying my Live account was being auto-renewed. Oops! Says I. I no longer have easy access to a 360. Better cancel it. So I call up. Reach a friendly rep. Tell I wanna cancel. Explain why. She says "Sure thing. Since it just happened today we can cancel that bill before it is posted to your card. Thanks for playing Live, come back when you get your own box."
I'm sure for every horror story around there's a story like yours. I just dont understand why you cannot simply cancel your subscription through the Xbox interface. You must call microsoft to do it, and even for the people who cancel without major roadblocks, my understanding is they still try to offer you free months and free points and stuff.
Incidentally, if you're hard up for free months or points, try to cancel and see if they offer you some. When I finally tracked down a supervisor-of-a-supervisor who relented and touched my wife's crazy international Live account, he offered me a free month and 500 points to keep the subscription.
Hmm, well, my experience was rather painless, just had to give a bunch of security question type information to the rep (Who spoke good english)
I guess living in the same state as Bill gates means I get special treatment?
Still have a problem with my 360 not reading my discs as game discs instead of DVDs. is there a number or website I can go to for repair service? And I bought my 360 as a used one from Game Crazy, so does that mean I still get a warranty on it?
Couldn't you just call the NZ number via Skype Out? I call pay and non pay call centres there occasionally from overseas (admittedly not the XBL) without trouble. I assume it makes you appear that you are calling from NZ, at a cost

I know that a calling card wouldn't work for it, I have no idea if Skype Out would or not. I've never hreard of Skype Out before, though, so the point is moot
If you did pay with your card make sure you not only tell them to cancel your account but also to sever the connection between your card and your account. These are actually two separate things that you have to do, otherwise if you get a subscription card down the line and let it run out, they'll still bill your card!
Also, if you're available to get a refund (I canceled my account the day before it was set to re-new but they charged me anyway) be prepared to wait because it took me four months and having my bank file a dispute with Microsoft to get my 49.99 back.
1. Cancel Subscription
2. Make them take your credit card number off of your account
3. Be ready to call back once every few days

Huh, ok, well, the disc reading problem more or less fixed itself. I got desperate and angry when it wouldn't read my perfectly pristine copy of Fallout 3, so I resorted to just blowing into the disc tray slot on the offchance I could remove some dust that might be obscuring the laser. Guess I was right, now my 360 will even read my old copy of Metal Arms: Glitch in the System without a problem, which is scratched to hell by the way. Damn, metal Arms is a great game, wish blizzard hadn't jackassed the possibility of a sequel away.

o_O that seems like it should be illegal..
Expect this to be a temporary fix at best.
