[FIGHT ON] Garou: Mark of the Wolves - Netcode is pretty hit and miss.

The following post was made before the game finished downloading. Garou is still awesome, but this netcode is well... not so great. Buy it to play with friends on your couch next to you, not over the internet.

-o-

Hopefully The Fighter's Generation doesn't mind me ripping off their entire Garou site because I don't feel like rehosting these images at the moment...

(aka Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves)

IT. IS. AWESOME.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves was SNK's answer to Capcom's Street Fighter 3. Featuring silky smooth 2D animation, rock solid gameplay, rockin' music and a wacky (but memorable) cast THIS was SNK's crown jewel... until they went out of business. Well, SNK is more or less back in full force now but Garou was, at the time, their last hurrah. The game is bloody fantastic.

Many of the characters have ties to older Fatal Fury fighters. For example, Kim Dong Hwan and Kim Jae Hoon are the sons of Fatal Fury's Kim Kap Hwan. Garou's Marco Rodriguez uses the same fighting style as Art of Fighting's Ryo Sakazaki and newcomer Hokutomaru was trained by Terry Bogard's brother himself, Andy.

Everybody loves combo videos~!

Grant and Kevin aren't up yet.

I can tell you from experience that Grant has some nasty corner combos though, so those should be fun when the last video does come out.

Head over to The Fighter's Generation's Garou site for some more information on the game and the series that spawned it.

Buy it. The game is 800MS funbucks and is easily worth 6 or 7 times that (what I paid for my Dreamcast version).

    Netcode?
    How's the netcode?
    Any bug fixes?
    Netcode any good?
Why haven't you posted online impressions?

I still have the DC version but that didn't have netcode.

THE NETCODE IS PRETTY FUCKING TERRIBLE.

    Sorry folks...

Would anyone like to come to my house and play Garou :P .

SF4 has Godly netcode compared to this. This is two bar SF4 connections AT BEST.

.... this makes me worried for KoF.

SF4 netcode isn't terrible. It just isn't in the same league as GGPO or HDR.

Hey solsovly, remember playing games via Kaillera when it first broke onto the scene? Yeah... Garou is like that. If I want to Just Defend Rock's reppuken I have to press back as the projectile STARTS MOVING FORWARD FROM HIS HAND. No joke.

Oh god. Kaillera was great for when it first came out... but I could only play people under like 50 ping on a college network :(

I want to put this in perspective a little bit...

When there's no lag, the game is phenomenal, absolutely smooth and wonderful. Out of the 15 or so games I've played now, I've really only seen terrible lag twice. When the lag happens, the game becomes nigh unplayable. It really sucks. Saying that SF4's netcode is Godly compared to this is something of an understatement...

But again, when the game isn't lagging, it runs wonderfully.

Also, my experience is on Xbox Live, have you been playing it on PSN Fig?

Nope, XBL as well (I don't think it's out on PSN). The best connection I've been able to get was 50ms. All of my 15 games were terrible earlier. I'll hop on again in a moment and see if I can do any better

I'm not familiar with the game at all, so I don't know how offline vs matches typically run, but in games with <100 ms, it runs as smoothly as the story mode does for me. I just played about 7 or 8 games an hour ago and all were running perfectly smoothly.

Good games to both Fig and Chamberlain. Games with Fig were fairly laggy but playable, and much better with Chamberlain. It really sucks that they didn't handle lag better... This game is awesome.

Yep, good games Slayer. I'll have to take your word for it that the game can be played smoother online then our games. Honestly our games were on par with the best I've had and there was still about a quarter second of input lag.

Title / OP has been changed to reflect that the game's netcode may not be awful for everyone, but it certainly is for me :( .

The online plays been alright for me, out of 30 or so games I'd say about 3 were really bad. Regardless of the netplay situation, I'm glad to finally have a copy of Garou, this seems like a pretty great port.

Hey, I think you might want to add these to the OP. They're combo tutorial videos for Garou characters. They start with simple tutorials and then get gradually more advanced. There's lots of text explaining the commands, and also offering some tips on pulling them off. They're highly recommended!
Grant and Kevin aren't up yet.

Hey Fig, I need to play you sometime. I've been playing nothing but scrubby Kain's with terrible lag.

I did finally manage to get the five wins in a row in ranked though.

I'm gonna be on for awhile if anyone wants to throw down, 2D style.

I WISH this was being released for the PSN. I used to beat scrubs down hard with B. Jenet. Nothing beats winning by slapping someone around with a shoe.
