Credit Cards?

I'm a college student with essentially no credit. I've had a few bills in my name to help out my family, the one's that are actually bills I pay have always been on time, some of the others have been late a few times, I don't know how this affects one's credit. I have a bank account, with a debit card. I've had it for a few years, only overdrafted once. Like, I said, I don't know how these things affect me.

Basically. My band is about to go on tour for the first time and we're going to the complete opposite side of the country (we're being paid to fly to california to do some shows, we live in Pennsylvania, it's pretty exciting)! and I'd like to have a credit card for this, in case of an emergency when we're so far from home. I only make about 500 dollars a month though (I quit a very hard job that gave me the hours I needed, to work another hard job with less awful bosses, but with less hours), and so I'm worried about a card that would charge me lots of fees.

Is there such a thing as a credit card that would just have me pay my monthly balance, and have things only get crazy bills wise if I missed a payment? Some of the cards I was looking at for people with no to bad credit, where saying that over 200 dollars in fees are taken out of the card, just for creating the card. I don't want this. I'd also like to avoid an annual fee. Do all credit cards work this way, or is there credit cards that will only ask me to pay them what I spent with it?

Student credit cards don't usually have any sort of annual fee. Ask at your bank.

They may give you a relatively low limit to start out with, but buy things with the credit card and then immediately pay them off, and your limit will start to raise and so will your credit. Basically now if any bill comes over $50 I pay with credit card.

Yeah I'm not looking for a huge limit or anything, just enough that I can use it if I really need to.

I have a citi mastercard with no fees. I don't really recall if I had to go looking for it, I started out with my name on my parent's card for a while which may have helped build my credit.
