Impossible to be certain, of course, without knowing exactly what bit your friend.

However, this exact thing happened to me a few days ago. I got bit on Thursday, itched for a bit. Next day realized it was swollen and red. Then realized there was two obvious puncture marks and found a dead bug/tick like thing on the floor. It really hurt and I could hardly walk on it for a few days.

I went to the doctor and got a cream to rub on it. Said if it was still bad in a couple of days to come back.

I'd just keep an eye on it and maybe use some ice to reduce swelling. And keep an eye out for bugs.

Id only worry about it if it starts to darken or pit in the center.

It's always sensible to keep an eye for changes on a thing like that, but also don't jump to "Oh shit amputation here I come". Some people are just really allergic to even basic bites. My gf swells up from just one mosquito or flea bite. On the one time a spider actually bit her (just a tiny not-a-noted-killer house spider) her whole elbow swelled up to balloon like proportions.

The midwest gets brown recluses and black widows, but if a widow bit you I'm thinking you'd know it.

Are there other symptoms not localized to the bite? Headaches, dizziness, muscle tightness, spasms, difficulty breathing, numbness?

From someone who was bit by a brown recluse and brushed it off as a bee sting at first, get it checked out. Worst that could happen is they tell you its nothing. Better safe than sorry. You don't want to wake up the next day and hear docs talking about cutting part of your leg out.

Heightened senses? Supernatural reflexes? Tiny barbs protruding from the fingers? Sticky, web-like good coming from wrists (or a desire to chemically produce capsules of it for slinging purposes)?

Do you have the feeling that at one time you were married?
