[Recommend On!] OS reinstalled, need good free apps.
Yesterday I nuked my C:\ drive and started afresh for the nth time. Windows XP SP2 is my OS, and I've installed AVG Antivirus, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and Spybot S&D. Recommend me some cool free apps that you think are either a necessity or a godsend or both
Skype for voice/video chat. Infra Recorder if you dont have Nero or some such burning app. FFDShow for all your codec needs. WinRar's free version is fully functional for zipping/unzipping, just pesters you to register but never makes you. CCleaner is a good reg/system cleanup utility to suplement your A/V & Spybot programs. SysInternals apps can be handy to the right people. Process Explorer is great for troubleshooting. Desktops is fucking awesome. OpenOffice, if you have no copy of MS Office. VLC is a multiformat, small footprint media player that can eliminate having to gunk your system up with Quicktime and/or RealPlayer. Google Earth 5.0 is pretty fucking amazing.
Actually any recommendations I give here will probably be things from the Desktop Thread in Moes Tech Tavern. All just things to make your desktop prettier.
Rainmeter/Rainlander - Cool on screen graphics/network monitoring/calender/to do lists/tons of other stuff
RocketDock/RK Launcher/ObjectDock - Apple-esque launch bar docks
Oh, schedule tasks to defrag, to keep things running smooth.
Make sure you have actually scheduled antivirus scans. You have no idea how many people just rely on the active scanning of their A/V and actually have viruses they don't know about.
Hey. I didn't say use them. But they are good to have on the computer when it does get deemed necessary.

Notepad++ - notepad replacement with a ton of added features (line displays, document history etc)
Pidgin - lightweight IM client.
Thunderbird and its calendar addon - great mail client if you don't use gmail.
Grab the Download Statusbar addon for Firefox. I can't stand using a Firefox without it.
As to the above, I was under the impression that at the very least, IE8 was not worse than IE7, which puts it light years ahead of IE6.
Yeah I am pretty sure the comments related to my recommendation where because they were Microsoft products and therefore could be avoided. But in the end you might as well have them and there better then the WMP9 and IE6 crap that's preinstalled anyways.
I'd recommend IZArc instead of WinRAR. Faster, more supported formats and doesn't bug the hell out of you with nag screens. Not sure how it compares to 7-zip though, other than IZArc supporting .7z files.
