I find all this talk of jerry-rigging vent, teamspeak, and CC to try to make them perform in ways which they were never designed for when the game itself handles this stuff extremely well by design, is amusing. . .
In theory it handles it well. In reality the server and game both shit their pants, and everyone is left with tactical blue balls
I tried the demo a few times and maybe I am just doing it wrong but, I run around for about 15min and I never see another person. The only time I fired my gun was when I thought this small tree was a bad man.

Uhm, that shouldn't happen. What mission are you trying to play?
All right, to the dudes who are mapping: I need a quick rundown on the scripting language. I'm looking at implementing the autokick. Any good guides? I just need to do a few simple things.
Honestly, the flight model seems pretty simple and some what arcadey... but I'm comparing it to IL2. So.. I dunno.
I agree on the fixed-wing vehicles, but the helicopters are modeled quite well. I can jump from X-Plane to Arma 2 and get the same feeling of realism (And much more feeling of purpose!)

Did you play the first mission with the helicopter landing?
I just followed the waypoints and stuck with my squad and I killed like 20 dudes.
Well I was trying Multiplayer. I will go for the single player thing next.
Bear in mind, this is an unforgiving game. You could very well trek for 10-15 minutes only to get one shot killed from God knows where. Prepare your patience.

The helicopters are extremely arcade, I haven't flown any of the fixed wing aircraft so I cant compare there.
Compared to a sim that actually models helicopter flight appropriately, e.g. DCS:BS, arma is about as arcady as you can get.
That being said, its a fun enough flight model. And allows you to learn to do some fairly hot looking landings very easily, but not that much challenge.
Honestly, the only part I find I am disappointed with(I had fully expected the flight model to be as it is) is how few of the features that the helicopters have in real life are be properly modeled in game. Such as way point systems, and all that really fun radar stuff the modern helicopters can do. But to be fair I haven't played around in the combat helicopters to terribly much.
To be fair I think the helicopters have to be fairly arcadey to contend with the fuck you up AA ingame. If it was flightsim quality not only would you have to deal with flying extremely correctly but having to also deal with the occasional missile out of fucking nowhere making all your progress void.

Also,it is a game and everyone is supposed to be able to at least fly a helicopter around.
Even if you are not an ace and sometimes crash it's still better than: "well i bought this 50€ game but I can never fly a helicopter because I don't have a fully built cockpit and a helicopter license"

You know. With the flying and the shooting and the crashing.
What I'm saying is that I'd rather be in a game that allows everyone to be able to fly a helicopter from A to B instead of a game in which only flight simulator pros can use them.

I can see where you are coming from, and I am well aware of why they made the decisions they did when it came to what kind of flight model to construct.
But I frankly cant quite wrap my head around how someone could be mad a developer of a simulation title for adding more simulation elements.
One of the best parts of sims is the learning experience which everyone on the PA server have been going through together. I cant count how many times I have heard, "Oh I didn't know you could do that" or some variation.
Though I have to admit any time anyone asks what that DP round is for I have a really hard time not cracking the obvious joke.

Well, you have to remember though, this is a military sim or a "war" sim. So it's not made to accurately simulate the real world flight model/vehicle model/infantry movement. It's trying to simulate a war/large battle. So it has to give people tools usable in a way to actually start a war/fight in the game.
In the real world, it's obvious that you would have to train years before they let you in a fight. But in a game you can't have that luxury, you can't expect to be amazing from the start but you should at least be able to use everything there is.
What I'm saying is that this game is great at what it is and what it's trying to do.
TLDR: Being a "sim" doesn't mean it simulates the real world in it's entirety.
Disclaimer: I love flight sims! I'm just saying that I like how ARMA2 didn't go the flight sim way so everyone can hop in. What they should do is add a pro and easy mode, then everyone's happy 8-)

You are right the sim does a really good job of being an infantry sim, with all the other vehicles there only really exist to provide some fluff to that aspect.
I would kill for a full sim though, if for no other reason then it would properly model a ground breaking feature called INDOORS. Thats right building have insides too imagine that.

I agree. I was hoping for an ultra realistic game, but it's lacking many basic features that I was expecting. If this was a full sim, most of you guys would be lost though. You'd have to read the actual FM's (and probably TM's too) and you probably wouldn't even be able to start up a HMMWV. It would be a much more complex game, but the overall experience would be much more rewarding.

In fact, it would be VBS.
Edit: also, its realism is obviously "off" in terms of vehicles and indoor combat, but honestly it's the most realistic feeling infantry game I've played. It doesn't model things like thirst or overall fatigue, but it goes far enough beyond things like BF2 that 90% of the people I know who play FPSes try the demo, tell me it's too detailed ("why do i need a command for holding my breath, another for bringing up my scope, another for binoculars, another for a watch, and another for a compass?! that's just bad game design!").
I don't know about you, but I like being able to play missions with actual players.

o_O, they just have lever to start them, it says "ON" and "OFF".
Well, first you would need the key.. which means you need to go to HQ... and if no one is there you would need the key for that.. who knows where that is..
Then you need to figure out which HMMV the key belongs to, as they arent colour coordinated
Good luck if you need to rotate the tires or change the oil

If this was a true sim, we'll be standing in one location for weeks on end until they finally decide to launch cruise missiles. After a few hours of missile bombardment, we will be sent in to sweep the area and one of us will probably die from a IED or something like that.
Seriously, if I wanted the most realistic sim out there, I would just join the military.

Hey hey, you guys! Anyone know how to set the sensitivity on the Z-Axis? I just connected my 0XBOX controller and flying heli's is insanely fun now. I need the Z-Axis so I can free-look around.
Also, a mission I'd love to see:
Last night, I was treated for the first time to a counterattack in domination, and I really liked it! So, for a mission, I'd find it quite entertaining to be inside one of the bigger towns, with maybe a BMP or two, lots of civilians hanging around and be tasked to patrol the city. The enemy would launch an attack (Random entry point) and well you'd just have to defend the city. Simple, yet I like it. There could also be the option for the enemy to come in waves, getting tougher but your side would also get reinforcements.

It's the same thing with racing simulators. You can have the most advance cockpit using the most advance racing simulator and it still pales in comparison with hoping in a real car and doing a real race. So basically you have to go in knowing that it's dumb down to some level to make the game appealing to a wider audience.
