Kicking Bishop Brennan Up The Arse [Father Ted]

It went for three series, finished over ten years ago and is still great. Who was in it?

father-Ted_280_422484a.jpg

The late Dermot Morgan as Father Ted Crilly. Morgan died less than two days after he finished filming the final episode of Father Ted.

myhero_promo.jpg

Ardal O'Hanlon as Father Dougal Maguire. You may remember him as Thermoman (see above right). Or that humanoid cat in series 3 of Doctor Who.

2.jpg

Pauline McLynn as Mrs Doyle, the mildly insane parish housekeeper.

1.jpg

Frank Kelly as Father Jack Hackett, a violent, grumpy, swearing priest who once kept a brick as a pet.

What's it about? Three Irish Catholic priests in a parish with a housekeeper on a remote island off the coast of Ireland. Shenanigans ensue. Like what? Like...

Entering Eurovision!
Simultaneously taking the piss out of Speed and milkmen!
And getting stuck in the lingerie department!
So, fellows, let us talk about Father Ted and how great it was.

"Feck" is, by far, my favourite fictional swearword. ("Smeg" follows slightly afterwards, and "frak" and "frell" are nowhere near my list.)

The song contest scenes from the Eurovision episode were filmed in a (now abandoned) theatre that's just a 15 minutes walk from my place.
A few old mates of mine were in the audience. Sadly, I was not.

As in smeg's use in Red Dwarf. I remember an interview from ages back where they were asked about smeg's origins, and they just said it was something they made up, and not short for smegma.

Of course, I could be imagining all that, but I'm pretty sure that's what they said.

I loved the amount of characters who were completely one note but hilarious

like the laughing priest, the boring priest, sarcastic priest etc.

Apparently the guy that plays Lucius Vorenus in Rome is the young priest in the lingerie section scene of the Christmas episode.

Also god I wanted to choke Graham Norton when he was on the show.

    Woah

I haven't watched the Eurovision song contest in years, but my family used to, and I remember Ireland's winning streak alright

The voting's become crazy political as of late

I think how political is it is one of the reasons it has become such a cult thing over here.

Just the ridiculousness of it in general and the fact that it has become political.

I have a very Catholic co-worker. We have very similar tastes in entertainment.

I'm not allowed to mention Father Ted around him.

He knows it's great, but then there's the whole Catholic thing.

It's weird, apparently when the show aired it got complaints from people who thought it was too light on Catholicism, and people who thought it was too harsh on it.
