Risen (PC/360) - The Spiritual Successor to the Gothic series of RPGs

ClevingerClevinger Registered User regular
edited October 2010 in Games and Technology
Demo for the PC is out! 1.1gb

What is Risen? It's an action RPG for the 360 and PC. Specifically, it's made by Piranha Bytes and is a spiritual successor to their Gothic games, which were known for their massive, wide-open and seemingly alive worlds and faction based progression through the games. If you've never played them, play them (except the third game, avoid it)! But if you won't, think of them as The Elder Scrolls' or Ultima's more actiony, third-person brother.

Release Date: October 2nd for the PC in Europe and the US, and also for Xbox 360 in Europe. The 360 version will ship in the US sometime early in 2010.

The game's only copy protection will be a disc check.

Little is known about the game, at least for English speaking people, as pretty much all of the coverage for the game is in German. As I find more information in English I'll post it here, but since there's so little interest in this game I thought I should make this thread.

A bit of PR
The epic role playing game is set in a medieval world on a volcanic Mediterranean island, The Risen story unfolds over four chapters and will offer multiple ways to develop the story by his own actions and decisions. An innovative and intuitive user control interface will support both casual and hardcore gamers. With full world streaming support, the player experiences no tedious loading of areas while playing in a fully simulated game world with authentic characters.

45 minutes of gameplay

There is a gameplay video, though, and it looks really good. Watch it!

Another trailer

An English preview.

And for those turned off by Gothic 3: I've heard they're hiring a shitload of QA testers and are polishing this thing like crazy, and also try to remember how good Gothic 1 and 2 were. They can do this! They've got this! Maybe...

    Information about Risen

    Tech:

    Story:

The magic of old gods is losing its power and that's why the temples with dark creatures are rising on the whole island, the volcano erupts.

The Inquisitor is "evil", he enslaves the people on the island to find "it". It isn't known yet, what "it" is.

    Features:

    *

    * There will be a few factions, and of course a system regulating reputation and dialogue/quest availability

    * The island (smaller than Gothic 3’s Myrtana) will have a few areas of different climate.

    * There will be other intelligent races, but no elves, dwarves or orcs (!). Only one of the races will be peaceful, most likely the gnomes.

    * More emphasis will be put on catacombs, sewers etc.

    * The combat system will be more extensive. The player will have to his disposal a few fighting styles. 60-70% of all skills will be combat-related. There will be double wielding, runic magic and possibility of transforming into different creatures.

    * The character development mechanics will be similar to the one from the Gothic series.

    * No mounts.

    * An alternative movement system while exploring dungeons

    * 40% of the game map will be underground

    * The fighting skills are new. For example: It should be important to kill a certain monster using a certain weapon on a certain level.

    * No swimming or diving

    * A complex forging system

    Characters:
    The Nameless Hero
    The Inquisitor
Sara (Sara is the first living person the Hero meets on the island.)
    Inquisition and Rebel members

Did you play Gothic with the official or fan patches? I'm going back through Vampire: Bloodlines with patches right now - I hated it when it shipped, but love it now. I think I'll try the Gothic series next - at least number 3. Any patches/mods you recommend?

I was doing some reading up on Risen, and saw that a Gothic 4: Arcania is also being developed, but with a new developer this time. http://www.arcania-game.com/

As much as I loved the Gothic series, I seriously hope they bother to take the time to make the controls as smooth and fluid as possible. It boggles my mind that by Gothic 3, the controls were only slightly less horrible than the last two.

The game's were made harder than they really should have been due to the bad controls, especially when you consider than surviving melee combat depended on having to time defense and attacks properly.

They were pretty hard games to me, but not because of the controls or interface. Maybe I'm more adaptive than most, but after an hour or two the controls became easy.

Even the bugs, whacked out control scheme, and slow framerate could not keep the original Gothic from being one of the most immersive and exciting RPG's I've ever played. Nothing at the time could really compare.

Patches are absolutely essential for Gothic 3. I believe the fans have a billion fan-patches for it that make the game stable.

    Witcher was polish.

And I'll go along with, liked the first two Gothics but 3 ended up being unplayable after a while. And even then, the gameplay I think get's a little stale considering how big those games are.

Gothic 1 is one of my most favorite games of all the time. One of the only games where I picked up the game just because of the screenshots on the back. Also the only game where I got so immersed in the game that I actually was scared to go in the forests or find a place to sleep at night in the game thinking I would be raped. I felt like the game was really alive.

Not so much the second game. That one felt like a game.

They also have a developer blog over at IGN

Nothing all that interesting in their first entry.
The second most important component for an organic world is the simulation of believable NPCs. Every NPC has its own daily routine and requirement which means that they will take a bite if they feel so and sit down if they are tired. Even the monsters take a nap at night in the woods which kind of leads to strange situation when you’re stumbling over a sleeping boar in the pitch dark night during a short stroll in the woods nearby.

I'm replaying Gothic 1 right now, and it is probably still the most life-like RPG (along with 2) I've played in terms of NPC schedules. Just something about it feels better than others.

It's called Arcana: A Gothic Tale, and it looks like shit. You can watch walkthrough videos from E3 2009. They're renaming it to Arcania because the series doesn't do well in North America, so they want to start fresh. It's essentially a reboot, and the story isn't a continuation (at least not to my knowledge, although the world is the same). It's a new hero this time.

"War covers over the Southern Islands like a blood-drenched shroud... and finally, War reaches the idyllic isle of Feshyr in the Southern Seas. The protagonist of ArcaniA - A Gothic Tale returns from an adventure to find his home town pillaged and looted. The aggressors’ ships - with an Eagle displayed on their billowing sails - escape over the horizon.

Seeking revenge, the hero leaves the destroyed city behind and soon realizes that this cowardly attack did not just happen on a reckless mercenary`s whim. An evil power lies waiting at the threshold of this world, and our hero will need to face this nameless evil. Yet the hero is not alone - his fate is linked to that of a beautiful, mysterious lady as well as a powerful artifact from the long-forgotten distant past, which plays a major role in the grandiose new RPG adventure.

The developer, Spellbound, doesn't really seem all that good either. Their games:

    # Giana Sisters DS
    # Airline Tycoon 2
    # Helldorado
    # Desperados 2
    # Chicago 1930
    # Rauchende Colts
    # Airline Tycoon Deluxe
    # Robin Hood
    # Desperados

I'm not expecting much from it. The E3 videos didn't leave me interested in the least. Risen, however, looks freakin' great. Even though it's not Gothic in title, it certainly seems that it's going to feel like what we've come to know and love.
