the idea behind what they do NOWADAYS has to do with imitating tanned blondes one might stereotypically find in southern California.

See, I don't think I'd inherently consider it connected to blackface. I guess I can't say I know much about blackface save what I've seen in old black and whites and read about in old stage routines, but blackface seemed to be a comedic thing resembling mockery of blacks and their stereotyped shenanigans.
They also used it when a part for a play or something similar called for a black person but they didn't let blacks participate. So they used blackface.
guys I was just pointing out the oddity of the Japanese using a historically offensive style in a completely unrelated manner and then having it be imitated by the people who had first used it offensively in the first place.
