Make my f*cking microphone work.

Counterstrike Source and Neotokyo have two things in common:

1) They are not Team Fortress 2 or L4D
2) My microphone does not work in them

I thought it was this, but it's not.

I have a soundblaster x-fi card (SB X-fi audio [EF00]) and a motherboard-based realtek HD audio thing.

Steam overlay can detect my microphone (currently plugged into line-in), as can TF2 and L4D.

Windows audio recorder, CSS, and Neotokyo cannot.

My microphone is working fine but it feels like there are crossed wires somewhere, and I don't know the technicalities (such as the difference between line-in and microphone, apart from them both being ports).

Also, mute seems to make things work and unmute seems to make them silent and aaaughble.

Halp.

Its obvious your mic works. Sometimes I need to check if my mic is muted physically. I know the driver is all screwy with both of those. Have you checked to make sure The mic is being routed through the right sound card? I've had this problem before and I can't recall what made it work properly.

I would check the physical mic mute first and then go see if there is an updated driver for your current mic setup. An alternative solution is using a 360 wired controller and mic but then it routes the sound through it too which stinks.

Hopefully something in my rambling will help.

My soundcard can go a bit wonky if I ever remove or plug anything into it, I have to go into the control panel and inform it what is plugged into what port, then everything works again. Try the mic as plugged into both the mic and line in ports? Or look in the game settings themselves and see what it lists as detected/possible inputs. Windows control panel for audio devices maybe?

[obvious] You did make sure that the transmit level in the Voice tab is maxed out for each game, right? [/obvious]

[dick] Valve is trying to tell you something, stop playing those shit games [/dick]

[sarcasm] NeoTokyo is just a reskin of CS with speedhacks/cloakhacks built in, so you're really only having an issue with one game [/sarcasm]

[douche] you can say fuck on the Internet, your mum isn't going to hear it [/douche]

I offer two suggestions for simplicity's sake. At least from there on, you should be able to better narrow down the issue (if not solve it.)

    1. Disable one of the sound cards and make sure everything is running through the active card's ports.

    2. Get the mic working on the mic port, not the line-in. Realistically, they are similar if not identical as far as hardware is concerned, but the drivers, Windows, and applications could all potentially handle them differently.
