Programs not opening

Howdy Cats, I'm starting to have a problem with my computer thats a bit over my head, and was hoping to get some help in how to fix it.

Its a machine I built a few years back, and its running XP Home. Recently, at seemingly random times, explorer seems to kinda freeze up. Can still click on things and whatnot, but no programs or windows will open. I can open up the start menu, but when I select firefox, it works for a second and then no window comes up. The Process is running, but its running at a really low memory usage.

Once this happens, nothing else can be opened. My AVG tray wont pop up, and I cant even shut the computer down, even from the Task Manager.(I always end up pressing the button) I closed the explorer proccess, and tried to manually reopen it, but nothing happens or comes up. I still haven't seen any error messages.

I am computer savvy, but something like this goes a bit beyond my means and skills. Any ideas?
