Fancy Feasting

mmmm fancy meals

so, I was looking through the listings for Restaurant Week which is starting next week in NYC, and surely your city has some restaurant week going on soon and was thinking about all the fancy restaurants

i personally have not been to too many ultra-classy places

i went to collichio's craftbar last year, and fleur de sel a few years ago

ocean grill once, umm, perilla, which is harold's restaurant in nyc (the winner of top chef season 1)

been to taranta in boston

and really thats about it, because I don't have the money nor do I have a girlfriend to take out to fancy restaurants, but, man, i've had some really ridiculously good food

example: the rissoto at perilla was out of this world delicious, as were the scallops
stuff like that is just crazy

so i was wondering if anyone has experience with good good fancy restaurants and dishes
or maybe even ridiculously good dishes at not fancy places

also, http://nymag.com/daily/food/2009/07/boom_top_chef_season_6_contest.html top chef season 6's contestants were announced

I'm in the restaurant now at school, and since our class is so large chef pulls about 6 students a day to eat lunch after we do mise en place

today I had a flatbread pepperonni pizza, french onion soup, a 6 oz strip with potatoes laurette and bernaise, and a browny with homemade neopolitan ice cream on top with an expresso

    on the house

    I win

So this is just a tip when going to a nice restaurant: see if they allow you to bring your own wine and ask what the corking fee is. The corking fee is what they charge you to bring your own wine.

This is nice because you can bring a wine you know you like, and restaurant wines are insanely overpriced.

The fanciest restaurant here is an Italian eatery on the edge of town, and the next fanciest is a BBQ place.

I just made stuffed shells with sausage and spinach.

Made some garlic bread with a fresh loaf of french bread I picked up on my way home.

No wine though, but I still have like 1/2 a case of Dos Equis.

there is nothing wrong with simple meals

a common misconception is that all french cooking is classical french, which it is not

    simple is best
