So I checked the search function and looked online at xbox's support page and couldn't find a solution.
my 360 works fine except it won't play games. No matter what dvd or game I put it it never gives me the option to play any of them, it just gives me the option to "open drive".
So I open drive > put in game > close > 360 says "reading" (with no audible wind up or disk reading sound) > 360 says "open drive" as if there is nothing in it.
I'm waiting for my Xbox to get back to me after sending it in for this very problem. If I'd try a game about 20 times in a row, it'd show up, but if there was so much as an atom of dust on the disc, I'd get a DRE. If you're still under warranty, by all means, send it in.
I've had the same problem, but I found the answers at the microsoft website.
First time, it was overheating. Waited about a day for cooldown, and she worked fine.
Second time, it was the clock. I am not back on Live yet (just moved), and the clock was not set for the real time. I set the clock to the correct time, and she worked again.
Again, I found these solutions at the 360 help website.
