PS3 - Taking the Plunge

Hey guys,

Somewhat of a simple request here; Im planning on buying a PS3 but am having trouble figuring out what the different options are. I remember back when it first came out it was pretty confusing.

So basically, any recommendations on what type to get? Are there any good bundles to look out for? Oh, and any MUST PLAY games I should go for? Im mainly buying it for MGS/RatchetClank but if there any other amazing exclusives please advise :D

Thanks in advance!

I'd construct a situation such that everyone died at the exact same moment so that we could attack whatever afterlife there happens to be en masse and so take it over and create a perfect unending afterlife existence. Also, everyone who wanted one would have an afterlife pony.

This deal just went up at Best Buy, which seems pretty good. Killzone 2, MGS4, and an 80GB PS3 for $400.

I actually just got a PS3 back in May, and it was one of the 80GB models that has PS2 backwards compatibility, but that cost me $500. You probably don't need BC.

As far as games, Valkyria Chronicles is an excellent tactical RPG. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is supposed to be great (I own it, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet). Flower is a beautiful downloadable game -- pretty easy too, but I enjoyed the experience.

You might want to wait a little bit, there are rumors of a price drop/update in the fall. I'm pretty sure that the only difference between the 80GB and the 160GB is the hard drive and whatever they are bundling with them. Best Buy's flier is advertising the 80GB PS3 bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2 for $399. That's a HUGE deal.

If you like online FPS's, Killzone 2 is a must have right now. Infamous is supposed to be a great sandbox game, but I haven't played it yet. If you like sports games, then MLB 09: The Show is the best baseball game for any console hands-down, and it's a PS3 exclusive. Uncharted is an awesome game too, with absolutely stunning graphics.

Nailed it. You want Uncharted and Valkyria Chronicles from minute one.

If you don't have a 360 then you also have the cross platform titles to enjoy : I like Street Fighter 4 and Ghostbusters at this particular moment.

It's worth noting that you don't need to worry about the difference in hard drive space with any of them. A 40GB is the same model as a 120GB - the only difference is the hard drive, which can be swapped out with any SATA notebook drive. Weigh the price difference with the price of a drive to see which is better value.

Games-wise, Uncharted is probably the only must-play, but I am enjoying the shit out of Killzone 2 right now.

I'm thinking about a ps3 sometime in the next few months as well, and was looking at that rumors article.

It says that the 80gb units will become hard to find, and the 160gb might be the only model that's available come time of the price drop. Will that mean that the 160gb might only be as cheap as the 80gb model is now, or might there be a cheaper (<$399) unit available at some point? I like the Best Buy deal, but don't really have the money right now, and would ideally like to spend less on a model without any games.

I bought the MGS 80gig bundle back when it came out, and it's great. I forgot how much I paid for it. See if you can pickup either of the Resistance games used - they're both pretty good fun if you like shooters.

Little Big Planet , Ratchet & Clank, GT5 Prologue , Wipeout.... and what the others have already mentioned. There are loads of great games and some of the "older" ones have been re-released and can be had for small money.

If you want to watch a lot of movies then consider getting a remote but the controller will also work for movies so try it first. Also do not fuss to much about the hard disc size - Sony allows you to replace it just as if it was a PC so there is no huge price to pay and the instructions and backup tools is available from Sony.

For online play you will want a headset but if you have a bluetooth one for you phone it is 99% sure it will work just fine. At the very least the Bluetooth connection type ensures huge amount of models to choose from. If you need bling you can even go with something like this: diamond-studded-plantronics-bluetooth-headset_ed2rr_52.jpg

Pain and Flower are both pretty good exclusive games.

    I also recommend Warhawk.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys!

I got the best buy deal(woo!) and am now in the process of hooking everything up.

I splurged a tiny bit, and got Uncharted/Warhawk right away (for cheaps!). Then I HAD to go back and picked up Resistance2, littlebigplanet and Ratchet and Clank, and finally Valkyria Chronicles.

Welp there goes about 700$ (hopefully worth it :P)

Damn! You should be set with games for a while. Of course, if you're anything like me it's never enough despite my huge backlog. There are lots of games on sale at www.sonystyle.com right now, by the way. I just ordered Street Fighter IV for about $34.

I personally think BioShock is a must play.

Although with the PS3; I am saddened that the MechWarrior does not seem to be coming our way.

Sorry to bring this thread back up, but I'm going to pick up the same bundle the OP snagged. I know they are gonna try and sell me $50 HDMI cables. Are they necessary? Will the $5 HDMI cables on Amazon do the same thing just as well? I have a 42 inch LCD 1080 tv and want to get the most out of it.

You do not need $50 cables. Buy the cheap ones. HDMI are some of *the* most overpriced cables with little to no difference, mostly no difference.

Yeah, just get them from monoprice.com. That's where I got mine and I've had no problems.
