Hi, I'm ElJeffe! You might know me from such mod actions as cleaning up gold-farming spam and jailing the fuck out of people. Today I'm here to talk to you about your new anime thread.

This is to be your new home for the next 100 or so pages. Here, you may discuss anime and things related to anime and whatever the fuck else people who are into anime do. Of course, hentai is beyond the scope of this thread, and anyway, what the fuck is wrong with the people who dig that shit, I mean seriously?

What you will not engage in here is retarded drama and bitching and whining. If you want retarded drama, go watch Desperate Housewives or Wife-Swap or something. This is to be a happy thread full of happy commentary. If I have to lock it for the same stupidity that raped the last incarnation, the anime thread will not be coming back.

There's a One Piece thread. And because of that you can't talk about One Piece in this thread.

Speaking of Gundam and Eureka 7... Okay this post is going to sound weird. And it's inspired by Mechwarrior 5's announcement.

Basically, when it comes to piloting mechs the more grittier (dare I say "western") a game or anime is, the more I enjoy it. That being said, what would be a good anime that follows that kind of theme? Like, as little happy-good-times or classic-anime-bullshit as possible. No kids piloting mechs either because that's dumb.

So, caught up on FMA:B on Funi's website.

The odd, quirky changes that keep being made make no sense to me.
The way they had the Fuhrer show up in the manga made perfect sense. The new anime's "I was on an inspection :v" was just hamfisted.

Also, having both Ed and their teacher fighting Greed simultaneously is a bit of overkill.

08th MS Gundam fool! The best giant robot series there is. Think Vietnam meets old school Gundam. Too bad it was cut short because the director, or someone high up in production, died in a car wreck. It still has an ending and closure, it's just a lot briefer than most anime series.

    What's Votoms and Patlabor?

Votoms is a super-gritty real robot series from the 80s. Would almost definitely be up your alley. Patlabor is about a Japan where mecha(called Labors there) are used for construction purposes, but eventually some criminals start stealing them for their own use. So the police create specialized Patrol Labor squads, known as Patlabors. It's also quite good.

Are the exposition dumps in Bakemonogatari better than A Certain Magical Index?

No. There's nothing to it so far except exposition, fanservice, and nonsense direction. At least at this point in Index, someone had been stabbed in the gut and someone else had fought some kind of magical church ifrit.

Patlabor is a somewhat realistic "what if" show based on mecha. Mechs are mainly used for construction work, hence the name. Later they are adopted by the police force, and the series is focused on the Patlabor unit in the Tokyo police force, which is regarded as something of a joke by the more traditional parts of the force. Of course, the military is getting involved in Patlabors as well, which causes some problems.

Votoms is an old show, which I haven't seen. It was a favorite of our former resident mecha enthusiast. I have seen the newer Votoms: Pailsen Files, and while I got bored of it, it fits your criteria. It's like an 80's action movie with mechs. Just tough guys killin mans with their giant robots.

I don't think I can even comprehend the very existence of a show with more exposition than Index. It hurts just thinking about it.

Urgh, so it's not following the manga still?

Oh, it is plotwise. There's just little changes here and there which are almost always for the worse. For example:
Here's the timeline of those events.

Ed/Al have their heart to heart with their teacher. She goes to talk to someone about hypnosis or something to make Al remember his time in the gate. Ed remembers he didn't do his annual report, decides to go to South HQ to do it since it's just two train stations away. Thus, Al is left alone, gets the note, gets kidnapped, etc - while Ed's away and Izumi's busy.

While in South HQ, the Fuhrer ends up there on inspection of the military bases, Armstrong along as a bodyguard. He's curious what Ed's doing in the South, he mentions that they were visiting their former teacher. Bradley gives Ed a free pass on the annual report due to their previous work, Ed thanks him and heads back immediately. Bradley and Armstrong tail Ed, with the intent of attempting to recruit Izumi since Ed/Al are so talented, so their teacher must be too.

Meanwhile, Izumi wonders where Al got off to, the same "someone saw him go into this bar, etc, etc" happens, she busts in by herself, kicking ass as she goes, and she ends up breaking her hand against Greed. Al tells her to stop, that Greed might know something about how to get the bodies back, and to go back and get Ed. So she leaves, gets back to the shop right as Ed arrives. She mentions the Homonculus thing to Ed while Bradley is within hearing distance. So Ed goes to get his brother, the fights happen the same way, etc, etc.

So plotwise, there's not really anything different. But why Bradley was there changes, both in terms of being in the city and in how he knew Greed was there. Bradley's questioning whether Ed struck a deal with Green gets a different light, since he overheard the bit when Izumi was explaining to Al. And by trying to shift around the "whys" and still include all the exchanges, some of the stuff gets really....off. Like...why the hell did Izumi bust in during the Greed fight in the first place? It served literally zero purpose. That sort of junk

So no, it's following the manga for the important stuff. It just seems like they're being different for the sake of being different in some small ways needlessly, and almost always for the worse.

Votoms is seriously great. Someone mentioned Vietnam earlier - the second arc of Votoms (Kummen arc) is in an Indochina-esque setting and pulls it off so well.

The main character actually is (supposedly) a teenager (he's 18), but looking at how he acts and looks there's no way I would've known that without someone telling me.

So did anyone else catch Tokyo Magnitude 8? It looks like it has some real potential to be great.

So, just watched the first episode of Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou. Not bad. The concept of magic as programs has likely been done before, but it's still a relatively interesting modernistic take on the classic setup. The characters are likable enough, and there's some plot going on from the get-go, so I'll likely be following this one.

Yep. I thought it would be interesting when I first heard about it a while back, and the first episode was pretty solid. It should be a good show.

I appreciated the show's choice to spend nearly the entire first episode slice of lifing the main character who's name I forget. It gives you a much better feeling to who she is rather than go for the easy route of 5 minutes of "Man, being a teenager sucks" followed by the quake.

I stopped watch the first episode at the point where he's like, HEEEY COME ON LEMME CHECK YOUR WOOOUNNND when out in space with the enemy. If there's anymore of that kind of dialog on a somewhat persistent basis let me know now so I can not watch it.

There is a ton of anime bullshit in 08th MS Team but it manages to be good despite that.

There's a romance set up between the two of them. If that is stretching it too much for you then yeah, you might not like it.

Yeah I knew that was coming the moment he said
    "Hey that was a woman."

That in itself doesn't bother me, it's a matter of how they handle it. I'm gonna take DotS' word on it and finish the series though.

I never got to episode 12 due to someone saying I should skip it. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and watch it.

The last episode is really weird and it doesn't add much to the series but it isn't awful or anything.

Given what was said on the previous page about the guy behind the anime dying before it was finished... I'm willing to excuse episode 12's quality. :P

They did a fairly good job on those terms and the series holds itself up well outside of that. The whole checking the enemy's wounds is more his personality than anything else. He's just naive at the start of the series.
