Need of new music

Hi all,

You didn't steer me wrong when I asked for new Fantasy/SciFi to read, so I figured I would try my hand at something else then. I have need, you see, of some new music.

However, the music that I am hankering towards right now can fall in some sort of subset of the following:

Rock opera
Dark Themed
Minor Key

Things that I have been listening to recently that have spurred this on have been the new Green Day album, Spring Awakening, things like that. Basically, I am looking for some dark themed, minor keyed albums that have some sort of story (although I suppose they could be stand alone).

Recommend away!

I'm not sure what minor key means, but

    Pink Floyd - The Wall
    The Who - Tommy

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (yes that is the band name)

Check it out. It's dark, and electric, and essentric.

I would also say My Chemical Romance's "The Black Parade" fits all three of your categories, and is the same pop-punk category that Green Day is in, and is also succulantly emo.

Uhhhhmmm... Dark Rock Opera... The Wall by Pink Floyd?

Yeah, just for further clarification, I have Tommy and all of Pink Floyd. As for what a minor key is, I would suggest wikipedia, most songs written today are in a minor key (as opposed to major). Trust me, it would be worth knowing the difference.

    But thanks for the suggestion!

I'll second The Black Parade. It spent a lot of time in the CD player when it first came out.

Yeah I'm going to say that's a lie.

I'm pretty sure major key has a substantial enough share that most isn't the correct word. Basically the usual difference (though not always) is that a sad, unhappy song is written in minor, whereas happy, jubulant songs are in major. It is all just different structure of the music itself and has nothing to do with the genre or quallity other than preference for tone. Knowing this difference is important only for people who are interested in the composition of, or creating music.

Sorry, I should have been more specific in what I was talking about. It doesn't matter though, you're right that it honestly only matters in the composition of music. I just like knowing about it due to the different aesthetic qualities of using different keys.

The Killers - Sam's Town is pretty fantastic.
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral.
Lupe Fiasco - The Cool - it's a rap opera with heavy influences of rock.
    Gorillaz - Demon Days.

Major Key rock opera's, or albums with a coherant theme:
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
    Daft Punk - Discovery

If you're looking for an incredible poppy/sometimes dark operatic/symphonic album, get fucking Razia's Shadow, by Forgive Durden.

Complete with Narrative voice overs to guide you through the fairly deep story.

I'd suggest checking out some Dream Theater.
My personal favorite album of theirs is Awake, but for what you're looking for, I'd say Scenes From A Memory would be a good fit. Really, you can't go wrong (though I definitely wouldn't suggest starting with Systematic Chaos or Train of Thought).

Yes - Dream Theaters Metropolis pt 2 - Scenes from a Memory. So amazing, absolutely love it and highly recommend it. I would go as far as to rank it as Dream Theaters best work, and one of the best albums ever created

Kamelot's album Epica and the follow up, The Black Halo, are concept albums that follow a story. The latter is darker than the former, but they're both extremely good.

    Haggard's Tales of Ithiria.

Those are what come to mind immediately.

Not quite sure what you mean by minor key, exactly.

Wilco's 2002 release, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, will serve you nicely.

Seconded on the Flaming Lips and Decemberists albums, as well.

Hooray, thanks for all the good suggestions! I am actually a huge Dream Theater fan, so I already know about all of their stuff.

But thanks on the other suggestions! I am definitely checking them all out today!
