Well, "only" 2.34 million. Flop am confirmed.

Supposedly S-E shipped nearly three million. Still, selling that much in two days in a country the size of Japan, goddamn.

We'll see in a week, but it looks like this has a chance at being the fastest selling game ever in Japan.

I just wish Squeenix would localize it faster

That last bit will depend on how "low" the Wii sales have become, year-over-year. Of course, "low" for the Wii is still outselling the PS3 and 360 (although price still has a large part to do with this).

I imagine another boring NPD month. It'll be much more exciting if/when the price drop for the PS3 happens, and the Fall releases start amassing.

iPhone gaming is already big worldwide. Well over a billion apps downloaded and all.

Indeed it is. But the cynical part of my brain has come to the conclusion: "If you want to dominate sales charts, make your platform as popular as possible and your games/apps as small as possible. Infinitesimally small. Like 1 KB."

Then, you just need to convince people they're good kilobytes. Random number generator. Coin flipper. Obviously, that's now how it works, but sometimes I wonder....

Well, I don't think they need to be "small". A lot of the most popular iPhone games are rather hefty, but we're at the point now where WiFi and 3G is good and plentiful enough to be able to download 10 MB games fairly easily.

But I do think that a lot of the success has been due to the sheer volume of free or extremely cheap games on the platform. That makes it, unfortunately, a bit challenging for businesses trying to make lots of money on the platform. However, it's perfectly fine for the hordes of hobbyist programmers / game developers who aren't looking to make millions.

I think the coolest thing about the iPhone is that it's opening up yet-another-venue for aspiring game developers. We first saw this with Xbox LIVE Arcade and casual web games, with titles that could be made with a handful of people at low cost. Now it's all over PSN, WiiWare, etc. This is a great time for any aspiring computer science student who's interested in dabbling with games.

It took me a while to find this thread. Name was deceptive....different....

What I wish we could find are accurate statistics on the sales of popular apps and get a feeling of the different sizes.

I mean, I'm sure you can find some statistics, but given how the iPhone app scene has changed as of late (as I understand it anyway), I'm kind of wondering about the actual accuracy.

I mean, the cynic in me is thinking "it's got a billion downloads because a bunch of free, popular apps are comparable in size of commercial web pages. The town I live in probably has billions of page loads in a period of time." Obviously, that isn't always true, but you can see what I'm getting at.

One obvious thing is, this is not the state of iPhone Gaming, as it were. It's the state of iPhone applications, and, perhaps, the potential of iPhone Gaming. I'm sure no one was making that claim, but I would like to restate that point. Then again, I say this as someone who doesn't own an iPhone (I guess "the rest of them" one might call us), mostly because I'm with T-Mobile and I don't really want one. There's a lot I don't know.

The real question is which will crumble first apple's royalties or the developers leaving?

Its fine saying billions of Apps are being downloaded but what percentage of developers for the App store are actually generating sustainable profit from these applications?

Think Apple are going to end up in the same situation as Nintendo with the DS that there is much in its own market already.

There's actually a surprising amount of data and information regarding iPhone apps, downloads, sales, etc. When you visit an app, it tells you how many times it's been rated, which gives you a general idea of how many times it's been downloaded. You're right, though, that "a billion downloads" is certainly not enough information just by itself. For example, it'd be great to know how many people were involved in those downloads, how many of them were free, what the average price is, how many downloads per person there are, etc.

I think there are other ways to get more stats, because I've seen a surprising amount of information regarding sales, downloads, etc. People seem to be a lot more willing to share info. I'm subscribed to a few RSS news feeds and see interesting things about iPhone app sales from time to time. I don't bother sharing them here, because I figure most of you guys just don't care, but if there's enough interest, I can change that.

Anyway, just from my personal experience, I've already bought a 6 games for the iPhone. It seems everyone I know who has one, has done the same thing. It's an easy decision to make, when you're only paying a few dollars to check something out. It certainly helps that the typical iPhone user is already very tech-savvy, an early adopter, willing to spend money, etc.

    EDIT:
That reminds me ... it will be very interesting to see what PAX is like this year. It's always been filled with people playing their DS. While that's certainly not going to change, I wonder how many iPhones will make an appearance? If it's like any tech conference in recent years ... it'll probably be a surprising lot.

I remember the DC in Atlanta immediately after the iPhone launch (I think it was the last one?) was packed with those bloody things. Buncha spoiled, loose-spending nerds.

    *shifty, nervous eyes*

Okay, prices have gone down to something much more reasonable now. I imagine there will be a significant dent...but then again, I've never been to PAX, so I can't say.

I wish we had a good source for download game sales - I'd love to see how well Plants vs. Zombies is selling.

Well, what we know for sure is that it's easily their best selling game ever:
How high? According to a quote from PopCap's PR head Garth Chouteau, "At this very early point in its history, it's the best-selling game PopCap's ever had." And that's saying something considering PopCap has also had huge casual game sales with the Peggle and Bejeweled series. Part of the reason is that the game, while still in the casual genre, also appeals to another audience. Chouteau says, "At the moment, we'd estimate that at least half of all buyers of PvZ would fall into the 'hardcore' category." Yep, it's a true "hardcore casual' game and in this game that means big bucks all around.

For a source, just google this. There's lots of articles repeating the same thing.

Excellent. It deserves all the success it gets. Casual/Hardcore game indeed: both my wife (very casual gamer) and myself (not) love the game.

Definitely agree! I sunk a loooot of time into that game. It'll be interesting to see how it does as well, once it hits other platforms (rumored to go to XBLA and the iPhone).

On the one hand there is no doubt that the MH fanbase is on the PSP. On the other hand, can the MH fanbase really resist buying this?:

monster_hunter_3tri_bundle.jpgShould be interesting to see how it turns out.
Oh no doubt, especially since the last console-based MH was released Feb. 2006 in Japan (ignoring PSP port to Wii). The series has had a lot of growth in the 3+ years since then and Nintendo's giving it a decent ad push. I just think the PSP success has created some lofty expectations for the console side, which hasn't been strong from the start.

The thing that's made MH so incredibly popular in Japan is the wifi multiplayer, so much so that MH parties have apparently become pretty popular over there. So unless people suddenly start carrying their Wii and TV over to their friends places, I really can't see MH3 doing anywhere near as well as the PSP installments. I can see it still selling over a million though, simply because the franchise is so big now.

As for DQIX's release date, there was a year between DQVIII's Japan and US release (though it felt a lot longer), so I'd expect it to come out this time next year.

Anyway, I find it hilarious that JCRooks has become the PA Sales thread equivalent of John Davison. Hilarious.

So has anyone else picked up Namco's "The Munchables" for the Wii?

I did so today on a whim as it was $20. It's a clever little platformer game that's like a mix between Katamari and Pac-Man. Aliens have invaded. Your character likes to eat. The aliens happen to look like vegetables. Shit downs down from there.

Your character grows the more it eats, and like Katamari, everything in the stage gets smaller to compensate so you can more easily traverse the world whereas when you're small you're blocked off quite a bit by objects.

It's very simplistic and obviously aimed to kids, but at $20 it's a fun little game if you're into the Katamari-esque, Loco Roco kind of games.

Online play isn't a selling point in Japan though and to make matters worse, it's pay-to-play. The PS2 installments had both of those too (though they cut them out for the US/PAL releases), yet didn't do well.

As for split screen, can the second player load/save their character from/to a SD card? Because I don't see it being used much otherwise.

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich singled out the war between rival open-world action titles Infamous and Prototype in his retail sales preview today, estimating that Prototype will eventually win out over its rival by a sales margin of 90 percent.

Sucker Punch's PlayStation 3-exclusive Infamous was released on May 26, while Radical's similar, yet multiplatform title Prototype (PC, 360, PS3) launched on June 6.

Though EEDAR estimates that Prototype will triumph overall, it also predicts that Infamous will outsell its rival by 35 percent on the PlayStation 3, a margin that may increase to 50 percent in the future.

"Due to near identical game play and quality scores, the Infamous vs. Prototype case study presents interesting data to publishers when considering the sales bump a title could receive by choosing exclusivity over a multiplatform release," concluded Divnich.

Divnich added that since EEDAR does not have data on how much it cost publisher Activision to support development of Prototype for three platforms, it is currently difficult to tell which strategy will ultimately pay out the most.

    Getting nervous about the NPDs.

I've got Infamous, The Conduit and Guitar Hero Smash Hits (Wii) all drawn down to just about 140k at TSE, not because I think any of them will sell anything near that amount, but because they all cash out at whatever #10 is if they do not appear in the top 10 themselves.

Guessing how many units #10 will move is a lot harder than guessing an individual title. I've got about 9 million across the 3 stocks betting that #10 wont be above 140k and that none of the 3 will chart. I'm currently #20 on the site with just under 34 millions D:

I know! Next thing you know, I'll be lamenting the state of parents not understand video game ratings and making a site that tells what games are good for their kids.

Seriously though, I find it interesting/amusing/sad that more attention isn't given to other parts of the gaming industry, specifically web and mobile. It's not as if those games aren't popular or profitable ... some are fantastically big, and they're all growing very quickly. I guess the problem is that most folks here are into video games, and not much else. The business/industry-side of me wishes more folks here and in the general games media paid attention to the vast amounts of gaming that's happening outside of consoles/portables/big-3-platform holders, but I guess people will follow what they know and like.

DS games rarely make it into the top 10. If the home consoles are real slow or if the DS is particularly high (like it was when DSi launched), then Mario Kart DS and/or New Super Mario Bros may show up. Other than that, if your name isnt Pokemon, you dont really have much hope, and both Platinum/DSi launch momentum is fading fast.

While the other fitness simulations have managed legs, I'm not sold on them necessarily staying very high in the meantime.

Wii play was also #10 last month. I wonder if it will finally get knocked off the top 10 for the first time since launch?
