PS3 - Overheating?

When I'm not using it, I like to leave my PS3 running Folding@Home. However, everytime he catches it like this my brother turns it off, because he's shit scared of it overheating and catching fire.

What are the risks about this? I currently have a USB-port-powered cooling fan that blows cool air up the front of the unit. Is that enough?

if there was a realistic risk of it catching fire, the device would have been recalled and you would have heard about it

I know, but I was hoping for some way to persuade him of this.

If it was an Xbox 360, I'd say you have zero chance of catching fire but a realistic chance of breaking the system. However, the PS3 failure rate is pretty marginal so you can do whatever you want. Especially since you're using an extra fan.

The PS3 has a fan built into it that turns on when the system is hot. Do you ever hear this fan? If not, then the system is nowhere close to overheating.

I hear mine because I don't keep our AC on very much, and it tends to flip on when it's upscaling DVDs.
