Do they even exist anymore? Can anyone point me to some good ones?
I can verify right now for the record that Doom is really fucking good. It's a rail shooter, though. Captures a lot of the feeling but not the method of play of old school Doom. Lots of shooting. Great fucking graphics, too.

Hate to be a dick, but what's wrong with the other thread that talks about iPhone/iPod Touch games? I've already gotten a few recommendations from there.

Yeah but fuck megathreads, I'm asking a specific question and I'm not interested in a general discussion of games.
I like iPhone games, but I find that all of the highly rated ones seem to be of either non-turn based genres, or are tower defense games and I am finding the selection a little shallow as a result.

The only TD game that was mentioned even halfway recently in that thread was just that Geodefense was on sale. As for Turn-based games, that's because there really aren't that many out there that are good. And most of the ones that are out are Fire emblem/ advance wars clones

Pheezer, that thread is basically just a recommendation-a-thon. Read it you dumbass.
Also, I feel your pain on Tower Defence. If you read the iphone games thread we could have been brothers united in hate for stupid fucking tower defence games.
Also,
Uniwar
Reign of Swords
Mecha Wars
Orions
Those are the good TBS games. Orions is a turn-based card strategy game, but we try not to hold it against him.
One day, soon, oh God please let it be soon, Rogue Planet will finally get released and it will be a great day for TBS fans. Or it won't live up to the hype and everybody will hate France even more than they do already. It's hard to tell, really.
Well yes which is why I need you guys to sort through the cruft and find me the good ones. A really good fire emblem clone would be fine by me
I can't vouch for "really good," but Mecha Wars is a pretty obvious Advance Wars clone that's only 99 cents, has some very distinct art (made by the guy that did Eternity's Child, I think?) and just recently added a free update with a second single-player campaign and more detailed unit stats.
And if you like puzzle-platforming games, Toki Tori is still only a buck and is pretty awesome.
lux dlx is a pretty awesome risk clone.
galcon is ok, but it gets old after a while. the AI isnt smart they just cheat at higher levels.
the mass effect game is ok.
bejeweled is probably my goto 'lets waste 3 minutes' game
Eliss is apparently back down to 99 cents—everyone needs to buy this. It's kind of a puzzle/action game hybrid. It's got a great BitGeneration/Art Style feel to it, and it gets quite challenging in the advanced stages. There's a Lite version with the first three sections, and I bought the full version immediately after finishing it.
That's one the negative effects of those 99 cents sales: if I bought it now I'd be paying five times how much I could have gotten it for and even if it's totally worth five bucks that's just really hard to do.

Real Racing ($9.99), this game is impressive. It has great graphics and framerate, of course, but it's also a well-featured racer with great controls! It uses the accelerometer for steering and you can delegate control of the brake and accelerator to the computer or control them yourself. There's also a slider for the brake assist so you can adjust that too. It's probably in between an arcade and sim racer and I like it a lot. There are three classes of cars and each class of car has two championships with three races in each championship. You can also upload videos of your best times in the Time Trial mode to YouTube automatically by linking your Real Racing website account with your YouTube account. The Real Racing website keeps track of stats and there are online leagues where you compete in Time Trials to beat each other's scores.
Galaxy on Fire ($4.99), the first thing I'll say is if you don't like space combat games like Freelancer (which Galaxy on Fire can be compared pretty well to) then don't buy this game, especially at this price. It uses the accelerometer as its main control scheme and it works pretty well. You have access to three different types of weapons (including missiles) and if you double-tap the fire button it'll keep firing without you having to press anything. As I said, it's pretty similar to Freelancer. There are many different star systems each with their own planets and space stations and there's a light in-game economy with trading. Lots of different ships and weapons to buy. It's a pretty fun game but let me warn you that so far I find the story to be absolutely atrocious, especially the dialogue. The cutscenes are also really buggy so any drama that might be communicated to you will be lost because cutscenes and dialogue don't sync up.
Occurro! ($0.99), this game is the most easily recommendable game that I have. It's a top-down space shoot 'em up that uses the accelerometer as its main control scheme. The tilt controls are implemented excellently and it's a breeze controlling your ship while you use the touch-wheel on the right side to control where you're shooting. It's a simple game with only one weapons upgrade that I've found but there's a variety of enemies and it's only a dollar!
I've also played Elliss Lite, definitely try that. It's multi-touch, where you have to separate or combine yellow or pink planets in order to fit them inside of these blackholes that open up. Yellow and pink planets begin to disintegrate when they touch and when you clear planets away these little star bits shower the screen for you to tap and pick up.
There are so many $0.99 games out there, I've been contemplating getting Flight Control, I Dig It, Harbor Master (Flight Control might have started its own genre) and Zombieville USA (although it's $1.99).
Edit: Oh yeah, Coast Guard was just made free so try that too. You control a ship by drawing its path on the screen and you tap on the screen to fire its weapons. Cargo ships attempt to dock at the island in the middle and offload their cargo (weapon upgrades and health) and you have to prevent enemy ships from destroying the cargo ships without destroying the cargo ships yourself)
