I must say I find the games painfully average also. I don't understand the praise it gets. "New Halo game has dual wielding weapons! That's awesometacular!!!". Yeah. Having said that however, to this day we still play the original on pc over LAN - Blood Gulch, four Warthogs, and six players. It's great.
But yeah, I never go near the single-player games. The first one was quite boring, the second the same, and I'm not interested in getting the third if it ever comes out on the pc.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

A shame because I've found the thirds campaign to be the best and most replayable especially with coop and skulls
In my opinion, Halo 3 really is an overrated game. On a few occasions, my friend and I would decide to give Halo deathmatch a try. We always walk away from the experience with a sour taste in our mouth.
First of all, the control is too floaty. Shooting and aiming doesn't feel responsive. When you hit something there's no "oomph" to it that makes you feel like you're actually hitting them. When you jump, you float and hover toward the ground like you're on the moon. I guess some people likes it like that, but I think it's an irritating mechanic.
Second of all, it's multiplayer objectives are not clearly stated and takes away from it's "pick-up-and-play" appeal. Sometimes it's hard to tell what is going on or what you're supposed to do if you're playing any mode other than deathmatch.
And lastly, there's really no incentive to win the games. From what I understand, when you win and rank up, you earn helmets and new outfits. This is great but not enough of a motivation to keep playing.
Modern Warfare and World at War is far better than Halo in these aspects. Playing on any modes, there is always markings on your HUD with simple color-coded instructions such as "defend" "capture" or "bomb". This helps you always understand what to do even when you've never played the game. Winning and scoring frags earns you XP to unlock new weapons and perks. These unlockables does not break the games and only offer the player more customization to their play styles. There are also over 100 challenges from killing 15 players while blinded by flashband to surviving after triggering a claymore. These challenges are fun and awards the player with lots of XP. Compared to Halo, there is much more rewards and motivation to play CoD.
Each weapons in CoD feels real and gives the expected feedback when fired. Weapons can also be customized with attachments like grenade launcher, silencer, and scope according to play style. Movement and jumping feels real and non restrictive. In my opinion, it is closer to achieving the accuracy and feel of playing on keyboard/mouse than Halo ever did. World at War makes it so all the friends in your private party have their name show up as dark blue on HUD and minimap. This helps your stick with your friends easier and also allows you to regroup with them quicker after you respawn.
The only thing Halo has over other FPS games is that it records every game you play automatically. It has a comprehensive online infrastructure allowing you to upload these screenshots and replays. And most important of all, it let's friends log in as guest to play split-screen online.
Also there's a gigantic grey arrow showing you where to plant the bomb in Assault and where to cap the flag in Flag. There's gigantic numbers with an arrow pointing at the capture points in Territories. There's a gigantic ball indicator over the ball carrier in Oddball. There's a big arrow over the hill in King of the Hill.
But of course if Halo: Reach adopts a CoD exp-style system, everyone will just bitch that they copied it.
Another great thing about Halo multiplayer is that it works well in both FFA and team-based. Most multiplayer shooters only get one or the other right.
I am all about going on my own with FFA, and Halo fills those needs nicely. COD4 does as well, but I can't think of too many others.
I once had great fun playing with friends on local coop on halo 3, with instant death and 300% movement speed. It was awesome. Pistols were about as powerful as they were in the first game, one shotting tanks and whatnot.
Reading this whole thread has made me psyched to play Halo 3 this weekend.
I usually see a big party with Fyre and stuff on my friends list over the weekend. Maybe this weekend I'll quietly ask to be invited into the game, in hopes that something fun can happen near my body, and I'll be forever remembered.

Once in a while, I get the idea that maybe I should try out one of the Halo games, as there gotta be a reason for it being popular. Would it be recommended to get the first one or just skip ahead to Halo 2? And does anyone know if there's any plans for a PC version of 3?

Id recommend playing them on console, they just really don't feel right/balanced on the PC.
Purely personal preference though. Although I do play a lot more pc fps games than console.
Oh and to answer your question, if its not a price concern etc, Id start with Halo 1.
Just start with 2 and so far no public plans for a PC Halo 3, but it'll probably come out way after everyone's already played the Xbox version and is under marketed and barely supported like Halo 2 Vista
I still bought Halo 2 Vista
Also I play Halo 2 Vista with a controller. It's just.. wrong.. with KBAM.

OH! and find a friend to play them through on Co Op with. Half the fun is arguing over who gets the rocket launcher or whos turn it is to drive the tank.
Halo campaigns on the hardest difficulties were the first games that I actually enjoyed playin with a friend because teamwork felt necessary.

In case the obvious troll is obvious stuff didn't clue anyone in, we're obviously dealing with the type of too cool for school type for which anything new is lame because insert-older-title-for-cred-attempt-here did it way better!
I played and loved SS2. Bioshock was a great game. OP is an idiot. I would ask why this thread is still going, but here I am posting in it. Train wreck syndrome up in here.

Yup, these wacky occasions are why I play Halo. You don't find stuff like this in other shooters like CoD. It's mostly the community that makes the game, despite half of it being prepubescent teenagers.
I'm fairly certain that's me as the warthog driver in the first picture. It does keep in line with my horrendous driving record.
People always seem to use the fact that Halo is simple to disparage it, and it is when compared to other shooters. It's accessible. but that's also the secret to its popularity and why I enjoy it so much. To paraphrase someone from GAF, if I'm facing a vehicle coming at me, I'm not screwed because I didn't pick the anti-vehicle class, and I'm not screwed because I did pick the anti-vehicle class and ended up facing someone with a machine gun. If I get mushed by a vehicle it's because I wasn't good enough not to be, not any other arbitrary reason. Everyone starts out on with the same slate to use and if someone has a better weapon than you in any given situation, it's because you didn't prepare for it, you or your team didn't keep a handle on where the weapons on the map were going, or simply because you're not as good as the other guy.
Vehicles have also been mentioned, and that's a big part of it for me as well. I've become pretty damn good at wrangling a Warthog around and providing a team-mate with a couple of killing sprees. I've not found any other game that lets me do that as well as Halo does, while still giving me other options.
But by far the thing that keeps me coming back to Halo is the people I'm playing with. My Xbox recently broke, and while it was away, I played Killzone 2. I absolutely loved it and I'll be playing more of it in future, but I guarantee that I will be playing a lot more Halo simply because the community is there. I like spending time with the TBK guys and we play well off each other - every time I've played with a TBK team, we've gone undefeated for the whole run of games we played. And I just haven't got that from any other game.

Oh God the vehicles. The vehicles control so damn well.
Controlling the Warthog and especially the Mongoose is pure bliss, I imagine if there is some truth to Christianity and Heaven exists, they just sit around doing Rocket Races all day.

How the hell do you get the Halo 3 Legendary "variants" to the opening seq?! I have only got the standard one. (badasses? or something)
And i have played that stage an asston of times too.
Smells like bulgari is my favorite. Its on the web if you don't feel like hassling with it.

Also, Halo is pretty great. Everything about it just feels natural and right.
On the other, there have been some awesome pictures that have practically made me respect Halo as a series.
(that sounds a lot worse than I mean it too... i think)

This last statement is entirely false
plugged in a 360 controller and cruised through Heroic
Halo 2 and 3 are optimized for the controller.
Halo 1 worked better on PC for me because it wasn't optimized for a controller at all.
But whatever works for the person playing it is fine by me :^:
