Drrrrry socket

So yesterday I got my toof pulled, the infection beneath the roots cleaned out with a pointy metal thing, and the whole gaping thing filled with this hardening goop and sutured between two little plastic (metal?) things

Basically, I really want a cigarette. Like really goddamn bad. So bad I don't even know how to articulate it. The thing the dentist gave us says 24 hours. The dentist said "as long as you can go". My parents think I should wait another day.

But the way I figure it - the brain of an addict at work - is that the socket is covered in fuckin' goop all sutured together. Ain't goin' anywhere. I can smoke, right? Please tell me I can smoke.

Or alternatively, if I really will get dry socket, please tell me I'm a retard.

This would be a good time to quit smoking.

I don't want to quit smoking. I want to smoke now, dammit.

It's not just the smoke getting into the socket. It's the CO replacing oxygen in your blood cells, slowing the healing process and increasing the chance of infection.

Quit smoking, Fandy. I smoked from the for over 14 years. I kicked it about six months ago and I have never felt better. The cravings lasted for a while and sometimes I still get them when I am around smokers. You just have to ignore those temptations.

It really is in your best interest to quit.

As gay as it sounds you need to find a way to keep your hands and mouth busy.

Don't smoke until it heals fully. Don't even think about it.

    Just. Don't. Smoke.

From experience, let me tell you, there's nothing quite like waking up at 3:00am screaming and crying from the pain of a dry socket and knowing there's absolutely nothing you can do about it at least until the dentist's office opens in five or six hours.

    You'll regret it. Trust me.

Also: I've heard that dip/snus can still cause a dry socket... I don't have any personal evidence or proof of that, though, as I didn't try it.

Spitting is to be avoided also, which you would be doing with dip. Personally I cannot imagine how nasty dip juice + recent oral surgery is a recipe for anything but ungodly oral horror.

I don't dip anyway. I just slapped on a patch and I'm powering through it.

    I still hate it, though.

I lit up a smoke the second I stepped out of the dentist office on my last visit for a root canal. My dentist chased my down the sidewalk and told me to put it out and wait 24 hours. If he chased me down for smoking after a root canal I can only imagine how bad it would be smoking with dry socket.

Good job on resisting the urge. And this may be a golden opportunity to quit the habit.

I'll 6th or 8th or Whateverth the quit smoking recommendation. I quit smoking just before last christmas, so almost 7 full months now, and I could not be happier that I did.

Well, I'm not gonna quit smoking this time, but these painkillers/patches/gravity bong hits seem to help. I guess waiting 48 hours is the best idea.

Dude... smoking weed is the SAME thing as smoking cigarettes in this case.

Actually, purely from a "sucking on things is bad" standpoint, a gravity bong isn't going to cause dry socket. You don't have to suck like you do from a cigarette or joint. Smoking anything isn't great as far as keeping your open wound sterile though.

Yep. There's no suction so I'm fine with the gravity bong pulls. They worked wonders after I got all four wisdom teeth out at once.

A Volcano Vapo pull would be ok too as you can just inhale as you normally would breathing from the bag. Although they're pricey but worth every penny.

Anyway man hope your recovery is a good one.

My pals have a nice vaporizer and they're trying to hang out tonight. I was gonna stay at home because of temptation, but I forgot about this, so maybe I'll go out for a little while.

For some reason I find this thread, and the mental image of someone staggering home from a dentist's office with four wisdom teeth missing to hit the (gravity) bong, hilarious.

I find drinking on the same day as being given a general anesthetic to be a "bad" idea. Bong hits, not a lot better. Seriously, there was enough of a buzz all day from the anesthetic, what else do you need?
