Bass retrieval!

So I used to live in North Carolina and when I left, I put all of my stuff into storage so I could just come back and pick it up whenever I wanted. Well all but one thing made it in, and that one thing was my Schecter Stiletto Custom-4 bass. I had a good friend who was in a band and about a week before I had started to pack their bassist had quit so he had moved from rhythm guitar to bass, but didn't have one to play. So I let him borrow mine.
Well when the time came for me to move, I told him that he could just hold on to it and if he wanted to he could send me $350 for it, or just hold on to it until I came back for the rest of my stuff, at which time he would give it back to me.
So back in early August, my girlfriend and I decided to make a trip down there, but we only had enough time off to spend one day down there before we had to drive back. So about a week before the trip I sent him a message saying I was going to be down so we should hang out a little and I'd get my bass back. He said that was cool and to give him a call when we got in town. However, I called him as soon as we got in and he said to give him a call later. Then I called him that night and he said he'd come over so I waited. He never came and the next morning I called him a million times with no answer before we couldn't wait any longer and we just had to leave town.
When I got home I sent him an angry e-mail telling him how much of a bitch move that was and that I wanted it back ASAP. So I get a big apologetic reply saying that he'd Fedex it up here but not for a couple days because he was pretty busy.
That was in August...
I've sent him e-mails at least once a month since then, but he hasn't replied to any of them.
Seriously, its bullshit. I want my fucking bass, I've got people up here who want me to play for them, but I have no axe and it pisses me off since that little douche is just holding it. If I could I would drive down there again but I don't know where he lives now, because he's moved since I lived down there. I bought it a couple years ago so I don't have the receit anymore, or I'd just report it stolen and have the cops go get it for me. Do you think if I called the store I bought it from in NC they might have a record of me buying it still?
Seriously, I don't know what to do besides just sending him constant e-mails and myspace messages telling him to give it up.
You guys could help by helping me flood his myspace with demands of returning Aaron's bass! Here's his myspace! (Thanatos Note: We don't do that here). If you do feel so inclined.

I thought it would be about fishing :(

Do you know anyone who also knows him? It might work out if you send some other friend over there to retrieve it, then you can pay them to send it back or try to get the guy to pay for it.

It is likely that the shop has a record of the sale, it would also matter if they actually recorded the serial number, or just the fact that you handed them x amount of money for whatever.

hmm...you're right about the serial number thing, I might try to call them. The problem with the other people I know that know him is that he was in a group of friends that contained one guy who was sleeping with my then wife behind my back for a large portion of time we were down there. So that whole group was hiding this thing from me the whole time, so once I found out, they all kind of stopped talking to me, presumably because they felt bad. But I don't give a shit about that anymore, I just want my damn bass back.

I guess the next course of action then is to find out if the shop does indeed have a record.

I would also threaten him with calling the cops, it might motivate him.

yeah, I don't know, I feel like even though I'm at my wits end, it would still be kind o a dick move to call the cops, but generally I'm too nice a guy when it comes to people that I've ever considered a friend. So really, I'd rather just have the cops show up at his house to get it than actually say anything to him regarding such.
Its just a shitty situation I guess.

No you did this guy a pretty big favor; you gave him your own instrument for him to play in a band he was in. Couple this with the fact that you lived outside the area. This is not something most musicians would do (unless they had more than one instrument which frankly you should've had before deciding to do this). You gave him ample time and warning about coming to retrieve it, and he gave you the shaft.

In short he is being a douchebag and beating around the bush. He doesn't deserve any sympathy and should recieve a visit from the cops unless he has a very damn good explanation as to why this all happened, which clearly does not seem to be the case.

It has been August since you've last heard about it, call the fucking cops, get it back, and then buy a new bass/backup bass so that way if you ever decide to give the bass away again you won't be in as sticky a situation.
