The Video Game Chronology Project

edited July 2009 in Games and Technology
Today, I present to you my continuing pointless and herculean endeavor: categorizing every single video game based on when they took place chronologically. Multiple continuities are irrelevant: all that matters is the year. Many game series do have an established continuity (ie Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star, Gears of War), but no point of reference on the AD timescale- until one is found, these series can not be included on the list. If you have any problems with any dates on the list, or would like to contribute the data for a game that is not present on the list at all, please feel free to post here. Here's to a brighter future and a better tomorrow for everlasting peace! Or something.

I too was going to mention this, because basing it on the KOTOR being 4000 years before Phantom Menace Math is not applied to our earth timeline.

Also, since you insist on being ridiculous by keeping track of sports games, i.e. Madden, I will snarkily point out that Madden 2010 takes place during the 2009-2010 season, with only the playoffs and super bowl occurring in 2010.

Double Also: Eternal Darkness should be notated at least 9 more times. :P Same for Assassin's Creed.

TRIPLE KILL: How are Warhammer 40k and Age of Reckoning concurrent?

Multikill: Trying to do the Zelda timeline, even outside of earth timeline will cause you to kill yourself.

    AND SO IT BEGINS.

My reasoning for the Star Wars dates- there is one source, although its canonicity is questionable, from an official Star Wars comic book story entitled "Into The Great Unknown" that, when extrapolated, translates the year of the Battle of Yavin to 1798, but it's the best source I had for incorporating it.

As for the sports, it is pretty ridiculous. This is actually the third version of the timeline so far, and the third forum it's been on. In the second, there were no sports games, but I felt like without them, the timeline would remain incomplete. You are right about the dates, though... as daunting as it may be, I'll be changing all the sports games with years in their names to the previous year. If I don't take them out entirely, that is.

As for Eternal Darkness (as well as games like Chrono Trigger, SimCity, Civilization, etc.), when a game takes place over more than one year, I classify the game by its "home year" - the year in which gameplay begins. Thanks for your input, everybody, and I hope you continue to contribute to this silly project of mine.

EDIT: Well, with some exceptions, all of the sports games have been removed... for now.

The quality of a game in no way influences its presence (or lack thereof) on the list- good or bad, if it can be pinned down chronologically, it's there.

EDIT: I admit I don't know much about the Warhammer series. I assumed it all took place in 40,000. If you can rectify this, let me know. I would be happy to hear your argument.

EDIT: Yeah, yeah. Zelda's continuity is impossible, let alone its chronology. Believe me, I've been toying with that puzzle for years. It's just on the Unclassified list because to keep people from saying "HEY, WHAT ABOUT ZELDA".

EDIT: Yeah, about Eternal Darkness, same applies to Assassin's Creed. The FRAMING DEVICE, or the year the game ACTUALLY took place in, flashbacks aside, was 2012. This is probably as good a time as any to warn that this list is not always spoiler friendly.

In the year 2941, June (Forelithe by Shire-reckoning), Bilbo Baggins joined the quest for Erebor. He returned almost exactly one year later bearing the One Ring. In the year 3001, September 22 (Winterfilth 1 by Shire-reckoning), Bilbo gave his historic birthday speech and left his ring to Frodo, setting into motion the events of the Lord of the Rings.

That should get you some entries for the recent LotR games as well as the SNES game, the text adventure, and any other errata.

Warhammer Online is Warhammer Fantasy, which takes place in an entirely different fantasy universe from WH40k. WH40k's events happen all over the 41st millennium, with most things that happen being long after that date, with much of the recent fluff taking place near the tail end of the millennium, with some things even happening in the 42nd millennium.

@Pancake: Ouch. Well, there goes that. If you ever find precise dates, let me know.

@SPI: I HATE THOSE. Fortunately, I was able to unravel the true dates of most of the Mega Man Classic and X games- at least as close as we can reckon.

@Kelor: Yeah.... it's beginning to look that way. XD But the late 20th/early 21st century is just as cluttered. Any game that is set in the "modern day" is put in its release date.

@AresProphet: That's what you're here for. Coming right up, sir.

Essentially you want this site. If you are serious about this project, start reading!

For example I learned that Shatterhand takes place in the year 2030, Shingen the Ruler is set in 1545, and Section Z takes place in "the 21st century."

You really should make allowances for notations like 199X so you can include Mega Man. Clash at Demonhead's manual also puts it at 199X. EDIT: I see you have Mega Man somehow. I wonder what makes certain dates more canon than others...

Find a master list of all video games, start at the top and work your way down, marking them off as you complete them. The easiest thing to flesh out the list and be able to check off one whole classification is to mark off historical games or ones with known dates due to books, movies etc. For example the NES has 1942, 1943, Adventures of Tom Sawyer, North and South (civil war), Bible Adventures, Ghostbusters, Home Alone etc.

Wait, so if it's not on AD timescale, you're simply not including it? Why assume any game is set on our planet according to normal human time measurements, especially when they feature things that never could occur in our world? What about alternate timelines and other dimensions?

Resident Evil takes place in 1998, just after RE0. RE2 and RE3 take place at the same time, right after RE1. Code: Veronica is also set in 1998, some time after 2/3.

EDIT: Whoops, I see you put RE0 - Code Veronica on there. I'd personally be more specific if you really want to take this seriously, but I digress.

UncleSporky: Thanks for the link! It'll be uberhelpful. Shatterhand is already under 2030, but I'll update it to include Shingen the Ruler. The Mega Man timeline comes from the Mega Man Wiki, which makes some arguable but compelling points for the dates currently featured here. Ditto for Metroid and the Metroid Wiki. If a game's timeline is clearly not our own, I don't include it here.

@Zombiemando: If it makes you happy, I'll make the RE section a bit clearer. This list is for the gaming public as well as my own personal diversion. If 2087 is not the date in which the game takes place, it can't be included.

@AresProphet: I'll stick it in 1995. Since the '65 portion is a flashback, I would qualify '95 to be the game's "home year."

By the way, crysis and cryis:warhead happen at the same time. Warhead includes flashbacks, but only audio backstory.

Also, all Warhammer 40,000 games should have a date. They include them into the official fluff, and even base books off them, so it shouldn't be too hard to find them. I might ask on a warhammer forum if you want.

Terranigma starts with the creation of the world, but i dont think any dates are given in the game(+ the world has been created and destroyed several times in that game if i remember right).

I dont think there is any timeline in warhammer fantasy that you could use to really put in any lists like this. Its never been stated when or how the world was created, only that the old ones came to the planet and made the different races that populates it 10.000 years ago(i think). I dont remember if theres is even a given date for the most recent events in the gameworld, a couple of years ago it was storm of chaos, but that been retconned i think.

Using the @ symbol to indicate the word "at" or for the function of e-mail is not the issue. I'm referring to the context in which it is used to indicate to whom you are specifically addressing. But let's not get off-topic.

I was clearly joking. I think you need to loosen up a little bit

Anyway, the Star Wars thing still puzzles me, I've never heard of that kind of reference to Earth's timeline. I'd actually be curious if you could elaborate or point to a wiki or something

@george-x I believe IRC was about from 1988, preceding your use in email addresses, boy.

(I actually just wanted to call someone "boy", everyone else was doing it)

Also this list is impressive, as is the amount of free time you have Gorblax.

@george-x: I've been using the @s since IRC came around, boy.

@cj iwakura: Thanks, but Wikipedia says differently. Explain.

Ah, my bad. 2006. :P Not sure why I thought it was 1999. Maybe that was the first game.

george-x: Aw, it's all in good fun.

@Mr_Grinch: This list wasn't made in a day, you know. But it is summer.

This is the most autistic forum thread I have ever seen in my life. And believe me, I've seen some contenders.
