Upgrading my cell phone

I'm on the Sprint network. I've been having lots of strange problems with my phone and finally got a replacement sent out. Frankly I am tired of this phone model even when it wasn't acting up and want to get a Pre instead, but I've only been on the network for 8 months so I won't qualify for an upgrade for quite a while.

So, what is the best way to do this? I didn't open up the refurb model so I figure I could sell it on ebay and also buy a Pre on ebay. Is there a less expensive way to do this? And am I going to have to pay some sort of activation fee if I do that? Thanks!

It seems like there's a few ways you could do this:
    - Pay full price for a Pre.
    - Buy one on ebay, but I'm not sure if it would be any cheaper than retail.
    - Cancel your contract and sign up for a new plan. Problems with this option include paying more in cancellation charges than you would save with the other options, and you probably wouldn't keep your current phone number.
    - Wait for the normal upgrade period, but it's probably much longer than you are willing to wait.

PROTIP: if you're a member of a credit union, you get lower monthly bills, and they waive the activation fee (I think it's for both new customers and upgrades).
