Tom Waits clicked with me immediately
Maybe it's because I went into Modest Mouse in reverse order, but the screeching and the crunching doesn't do it for me the way their softer stuff does.

I didn't say Waits in general, I said some of his material took me a while to appreciate

And that's a good thing for you!
I was talking about in my own personal experience!
I have found that when introducing Tom Waits to people, it's best to start out on his more restrained stuff before playing a song like say "Filipino Box Spring Hog"

First Tom Waits song I ever heard was "Little Drop of Poison"
it's pretty straightforward but has a hint of the darker weirder side of his stuff
Two years ago I started listening to all the older stuff from MM. It was around when We Were Dead was released, and I had tickets to concert late summer. I went to it without having heard the new album, and of course they played that over the older stuff (which they still played; just less).
Anyway it was sort of disappointing because I had just gotten to like the old stuff.
I saw them again recently thought and it was more older stuff and really awesome.
I still have no idea if I actually like the part in Coffee & Cigarettes with Iggy Pop and Tom Waits
Edit: Okay I'm watching it again now and it's the best
It is, in fact, the best.
I heard my first Tom Waits song... hm... actually, the first time I heard a song of his and actually knew it was Tom Waits was probably during my radio show in my freshman year of college. I got on that boat way after everyone else.
But I made up for it by playing "Misery's the River of the World" every morning on the radio, right after "Nice Weather for Ducks" by Lemon Jelly. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it is the truth.
