DEFCON 15

What is Black Hat?
The Black Hat Briefings have become the biggest and the most important security conference series in the world by sticking to our core value: serving the information security community by delivering timely, actionable security information in a friendly, vendor-neutral environment.

What is DEFCON?
DEFCON is one of the oldest continuous running hacker conventions around, and also one of the largest.

Isn't hacking teh bads? D:
Hacking has a lot of negative stigma attached to it, even though the term originated, in part, due to a friggen' railroad club. A good definition of a hacker can be found here, and Wikipedia has good articles on the different nuances of the word hacking.
Long story short, a lot of people take pride in being known as hackers, and by no means do these people do illegal things all the time.

The purpose of the threads is to discuss the things being revealed at these conferences, whether any PA'ers are going, and computer security/hacking in general. I'll be attending DEFCON, it'd be interesting to see any of you there.

I saw a really cool presentation about subway pay cards one time and scamming the system out of crazy money. Apparently they couldn't show it at the con so they just posted it online. Hey here it is. This link is a PDF so if you're retarted and using Adobe Reader instead of Foxit your computer will anally violate your parents.

    I'll be there.

PROTIP: At DEFCON, bring cash. Because people will hack your creditz? No, because processing credit cards costs money (vendors get charged a transaction fee) and time processing the transaction, and the conference likes to keep things simple, fast, and cheap.

Some of the vendor room guys may take other forms of payment, but the conference and the conference loot booth takes greenbacks only.

DEFCON is... quite an experience. I'm not looking forward to the heat though... Staying indoors, mostly. =)

Thanks for the advice! I've a feeling I'm going to need to restrain myself from emptying my bank account though.

What is for sale at DEFCON? I can't think of something that would be for sale. I'll take ten of those Hackmotron 5000s.

T-shirts, various electronics, lockingpicking stuff IIRC, etc.

Just fyi. Lockpicking stuff in some places( LOL KALIFORNIA ) is illegal to own if you are not a locksmith. Just a word of caution for some people out there.

Well I've read about some pretty crazy shit like keyloggers using remote laser microphones or wallpower socket key sniffing being presented at the conference. Definitely sounds like those guys know what they are doing...

Bah! Adam Savage is presenting today, and I didn't get in line the hour+ beforehand to make it into the conference hall.
