So they're an Irish-American army unit from New York City, right? They're the originators of the "Fighting Irish" nickname that Notre-Dame later adopted along with Civil War chaplains from the unit, who presumably started the long trend of crazy tough chaplains (see below). It was formed a long time ago, blah blah strife, blah blah people who call themselves the Know-Nothing Party hate and fear them because ooh the Irish (John Wilkes Booth was a wannabe Know-Nothing, incidentally).
They fought at Antietam in the Civil War (60% casualties in the Sunken Road, later called Bloody Lane, for those familiar with the battlefield) and distinguished themselves all over the place, getting their Fighting Irish monicker in the process. At Gettysburg they held the Wheatfield and got killed all over the damned place again.
There's a movie about the regiment's action in WWI, called (go figure) The Fighting 69th. It's got James Cagney in it, starring as a made-up guy. It's a pretty ridiculous film, to be honest.

During WWI, "Wild Bill" Donovan led them, getting three Purple Hearts and the Medal of Honor in the process. "Wild Bill" went on to form the OSS, and later head up the CIA. The poet Joyce Kilmer ("I think that I shall never see, a poem lovely as a tree") was a member (he was killed on the Marne) and so was Father Francis Duffy, who refused to to take weaponry to defend himself at Meuse-Argonne. Instead he continued administering last rites to the fallen, unarmed and in the thick of the battle. He's the most decorated cleric in the history of the U.S. Army. He received the Distinguished Service Cross and Medal, the Légion d'Honneur, and the Croix de Guerre. He and his seminary pals before the war were accused of heretical Modernism, and when he got back from the war he served as a priest in Hell's Kitchen until he died. Also he has a Square in NYC named after him.

He's probably somewhere not losing 198 men out of the 532 who were still alive in the unit.
But secretly I think you mean Ronald Speirs, who is busy capturing a Howitzer.
