The english conquest of Ireland had papal backing therefore Irelands independence goes against the popes wishes and the country should be banned for blasphemy hope this helps.

THE DEFAMATION Bill was passed by a single vote after the Government nearly suffered a defeat on an amendment by Fine Gael’s Eugene Regan which would have deleted the offence of blasphemy from the Bill.
Atheists can be prosecuted for saying that God is imaginary. That causes outrage.
Pagans can be prosecuted for saying they left Christianity because God is violent and bloodthirsty, promotes genocide, and permits slavery.
Christians can be prosecuted for saying that Allah is a moon god, or for drawing a picture of Mohammed, or for saying that Islam is a violent religion which breeds terrorists.
Jews can be prosecuted for saying Jesus isn’t the Messiah.
Ireland’s Blasphemy Bill not only criminalizes free speech, it also gives the police the authority to confiscate anything deemed “blasphemousâ€. They may enter and search any premises, with force if needed, upon “reasonable suspicion†that such materials are present.
What the fuck Ireland?
God damn it. Seriously, Ireland, what the fuck is your problem? Like just ten minutes ago you mostly figured out to stop blowing up churches that have the "wrong" kind of Jesus-worship, and now you do this? Fuck.

also I would be very surprised if anything like this happened
Exactly. But the 1984 scenario really gets people riled up so of course it will be trotted out.
In the end, I don't see this law being strictly enforced anyway if at all.

Yeah because a government authority having too much power never turns out poorly for the population.

When Ireland turns into a dictatorship, let me know.

stall the ball for one minute, I am very pissed off about this law
but, unfortunately our constitution requires that there be a law about blasphemy. Up to this point we have had a law about it, which was unenforceable due to there being a lack of a proper definition of what blasphemy is.
since the European convention on human rights act, the courts have been required to interpret laws so as they be compatible with the act if possible.
So last year there was a review of the constitution with the idea of updating some laws.
Now we may not like it, but it's in our constitution and we can't really ignore that, and calling a referendum over this would be very expensive and we are kind of up to are tits in recession at the moment.
so really I don't know what the right thing to do is all I can say is that I'm not happy about it.
One more thing, in our states history only one case of blasphemy was ever brought before the courts, so that is worth noting.

Right because bad government always comes in the form of dictatorship.
I actually agree with the second point, I hope (and believe) this will be removed from the constitution eventually
I know it was proposed before but nothing came of it
Right but that's what needs to happen. I see your thing about "it's kinda vestigial and it's expensive to fix" but really, seriously, that shit has to get fixed.
While this is a fairly ridiculous law, there are so many many many laws all over that world that make absolutely no sense and are never enforced. Especially in the United States. It's really not that unusual, it just has the word blasphemy in it.

Yes but noone mentions these laws in a serious context. To do so is quite embarrassing, Ireland.
Ferrus on
I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

Has anyone mentioned that Section 4 pretty much describes every religion that has ever existed?
Because it does.
"Unless you believe what we tell you to believe, you will be condemned to an eternity of suffering beyond imagining because you had the gall to be born."
How does that not constitute "oppressive psychological manipulation"?

I know. But it's also geographically further from the United States of America, so it's really quite even.

it's still a really bad law with a lot of room for abuse
While alot of people are saying that having the capacity for an injust law is pretty terrible in and of itself.
These are both valid points.
Just wanted to point that out.
