Help me buy a Laptop

Well, I've just started my 4th year at university and for the first time in my life I find myself needing a Laptop. Unfortunately I know nothing about laptops so I was wondering if anyone had any basic advice about Laptop shopping. I've had a basic look around and think that something middle of the range would suit me best. I don't want a netbook, primarily because the tiny screen puts me off. I also don't want a multimedia machine. I'm only going to be using this for study related purposes (Reading papers, writing stuff and recording results in the field primarily) so paying more for better graphics seems like a waste.
Finally, I'm in Australia so if any Australians had any particular recommendations for good places to buy I'd appreciate that. Basically I want to know what a good range Laptop is, what are some good sellers and whether there are any particular models to avoid.

Get a basic Dell or HP machine.

You're going to want something with a 14.1 or 15'' screen. Probably 14.1 since you're mainly using it for study and not 3D modeling. The screen size is probably the most important aspect at this point, it will effect the battery and price point the most. Otherwise all laptobs these days have Wifi, CD/DVD readers/burners, and dual cores with a gig of ram or so - which is all more than sufficient for study/itunes.

Look for sales at retail stores to get reasonable prices. I've seen great student deals from time to time on Dell/HP's website that include a Student edition of Office {Word, Powerpoint, Excel, OneNote}. The Australia thing takes me into unknown territory so someone else will have to help in that regard. :(

    Cheers!
That gives me a starting point. A lot of retail stores seem to be having/have had sales recently so I'll check them out.
