Thinking About Getting a Tattoo

Damn ment for this to go in H/A! Can a mod move this please?

So I have been thinking about a tattoo of my favorite quote for a while now. And I feel like now is about time to get that tattoo. I pretty much have two concerns. The first is that I don't have any other tattoo's or piercing so I am thinking it might look odd if I just have a couple lines tattooed on my back/arm/shoulder and nothing else.

My other concern, sort of in the same vein, is should I just have this written out on my back or shoulder or should I look for a more artistic way to present this quotation? I am not necessarily thinking that there needs to be an image to go along with it but maybe a way to make it more visually interesting than simple words. I am not an artistic person so I am having a hard time thinking of how I would even do this.

I realize I should go to a tattoo artist and get a consultation and I will. But I would rather have some of this sorted out in my own mind than go in blank.

I am curious if anyone else has been in a similar position? If you got a similar tattoo and then felt it looked out of place or regretted it from a purely aesthetic point of view? I would also appreciate any ideas as far as placement or how set up the quote.

The quote itself is:

“To not be like your parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself. To cut yourself out of stone.”

Thanks H/A !

I had a stick of Carefree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor, I was back to pondering my mortality

I may not be the best person to give advice, as I know I would absolutely hate and regret anything I got as a tattoo within a matter of months (I'm just like that), but I've seen some stylized quote tattoos on friends that look pretty cool.

Calligraphy-type fonts seem pretty common and look pretty decent, in my opinion.

If it's your first, and definitely if it's what you think will be your only tattoo, get it somewhere that will normally be covered easily (like across the top of your back or on your upper arm).

make sure it's what you want forever, but you've got the right idea going to the artist to design something if you're not good at that stuff. Or get an artistic friend to design it for you.

DON'T SKIMP. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean "good deal" as i have found out the hard way.

How long have you wanted the tattoo? Wait a year before you get it done. I did this and do not regret the work I've had done at all.

With that said, quote tattoos can look very good if done well.

In fact, most good tattoo artist know that their skill is valuable and set their price after that. And for christ's sake investigate first. Not just the shop, but the actual, individual artist you want to do your thing.

Most guys have a book of their work. Listen to Visti. I got recommended a shop, (it was the cheapest as well, so i jumped on it) and the artist i ended up with was terrible. i went to get it redone, and was scolded for letting my friends tattoo me. He was appalled when i said i got it from a shop.

Oh god, on this note there was this one kid in my high school who got the entire lyrics to Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams on his back. It was filled with typos and was generally a terrible idea for a piece.

This will most likely be my only tattoo and I have been thinking about getting it for several years. It just happens that I am leaving work and going back to school. And it seems like a good way to commemorate starting down a new path by finally getting the tattoo I have been thinking about.

And, yes, I will want to have this in a place that is easy to cover up. I'd rather not have to explain this slightly emo quote and the reason behind it to random people. Right now I am thinking having each sentence on its own line and putting it on the left side of my back below my shoulder blade.

The Hayden Panetierre "Live without regrets" tattoo is pretty awesome.

Er... that's why it's awesome... because of the irony.

She doesn't strike me as the type to be ironic on purpose with Latin. Maybe that's just me. =)
