I wanna stream media

So, I've got FiOS 25/15 connection, I've got 1.5TB of media, and and a server. I want to stream it to myself and family...

The project is two parts.

First, I've Kodak camcorder that records in 720p and saves all it's files as .mp4, I want to stream these, but I'm not sure what the protocol is.

Second, I've got a bunch of .avi and .mp3s I want to stream as well, I've got Windows Media Streaming Services installed on my server, and have successfully streamed .wmv files over the net, but I can't get the rest of it to work...

For the MP4s I see that Apple has Darwin or Quicktime streaming servers, but those both appear to be designed to run on a Mac server...

My server is a Windows Home Server, so a dumb down Windows Server 2003 box, I've already got it pretty decked out, and I'm using webguide to stream, but I want something that'll achieve a little more 1:1 streaming quality than something that converts to flash....

I know Vimeo and Youtube are free options online, but I want to host this stuff myself, not to mention time and size limits that both providers have... HD Videos can get rather large rather fast...

Thanks

Not that I know how to do it, but I've heard that VLC can be put to this purpose. Or do you mean specifically streaming over the web? VLC would require you to use it as a client (although there are browser plugins).

I mean streaming it out over the internet... I know how to stream between computers internally on a network, I do it all the time...

I know Windows Media Player 12 in Windows 7 is suposed to be able to do it, but my HTPC and WHS don't have W7 on it...

There a way I can get WMP12 on Windows Vista?

I always streem on a LAN, but I think Tversity can do it - they claim mobile devices, and I'd assume most of those are going through 3G and have to be directed to a specific URL.

Does it re-encode to flash as it's streaming, or is it the AVI/MP4? I'm trying to avoid a flash re-encode...

Tversity can re-encode to a variety of formats. I'm pretty sure you can get it to just stream the original file, too.
