Anyone play this?
I just got into it recently. It's really fun. There's no resource gathering or buildings to fashion. It's just pure action with RTS controls. I'm having a lot of fun with the campaign.
I venture online and play, and it's really easy to pick up and have a contribution to the game. End game is great with both sides earning the ability for the Tactical Nuke, can change the tide late in the game.

World in Conflict is a Real-Time Strategy game developed by the Swedish game company Massive Entertainment and published by Sierra Entertainment (later Ubisoft Entertainment), World in Conflict takes place in 1989, but instead of the Cold War coming to a close, the Soviet Union attacks and a "World War III" begins. While World in Conflict is considered to be an RTS, it plays dramatically different than a traditional RTS. Players are allotted a certain number of "Reinforcement Points" that they can use to call in support. Depending on their "Role" (which class of units they specialize in) in the battle, players can call on certain units to aid in the overall conflict. As a player helps their team, either by destroying enemies or by capturing and reinforcing "Command Points,” they earn "Tactical Aid Points" used to call in support from off the battlefield. World in Conflict emphasizes team-play over individual actions. Players that work more cohesively and as a team, balancing the distribution of roles and making maximum use of their Tactical Aid, will often times be the victorious team.
The US collector's edition of World in Conflict came with an authentic piece of the Berlin Wall, as well as other extra content and achievements in game. World in Conflict recieved its first expansion, a "mission pack" entitled World In Conflict: Soviet Assault in 2009.

There was a thread about this game around that time...
My Backloggery
Both it and its expansion are on steam for 20 bucks. Highly recommend any RTS fan to get it
Going to reinstall tonight, perform some glorious tank rushes
The single-player game is, to me, completely pointless and actually confuses the style of action the multi-player portion offers.
Still love that song.

I loved chopping down trees in Age of Kings.

Rofl.
You're beautiful. (With words.)
But seriously, I felt like with those old school Age of Empires RPGs that I was really invested in my little civ town with all those villagers chopping trees and building barracks and whatnot. For me, half the fun was quickly building my lovely little town - and then allowing it to produce soldiers to go off and fight on my behalf.
::cries::
But alas, I don't think they make games like that anymore.
Starcraft 2? Command & Conquer 3/4? Supreme Commander?
Thank you, I could not resist doing so!
They have base building and resource-collecting along the same lines of complexity as Age of Empires?
I remember Starcraft the original only having two resources, and they were very straightfoward. And the buildings were much simpler. I don't think they're making SC2 any different.
I can't speak to the other two/three titles you mentioned; haven't played them.
Age of Empires had four resources - Stone, Gold, Wood, and Food. Each one was valuable in it's own special way. Stone was used primarily to build defensive fortifications. Gold was used to build some of the more expensive but powerful units. Wood and food are critical to everything. And there was overlap everywhere. Gold and Stone were gathered very simply - build a gathering center near a stone quarry and task villagers to mine. Wood, however, required clever placement of your villagers, and resembled something like ants slowly eating away at a carcass. The very map would change over time thanks to your villagers clearing out more and more of the impassable forests. More than one Age of Empires game went on for so long that your villagers had chopped down every major forest on the map, and your workers would traverse the map in search of lone straggler trees. Food, of course, was likely to be the most interesting. Carefully managing your boars and deer, taking advantage of wolves - along with fishing and slaughtering sheep - gave the initial round of the game an extra layer of depth. After the local wildlife was exhausted, farms took over much of the food production as the game shifted to focus on combat.
When you add in the highly variable base-building, with it's castles, walls, palisades, town centers, and a myriad of other complex and differentiated structures, and what do you get? A game that allows a player to quickly craft their own living, breathing town - and a civilization ready to wage war.
God, that game was amazing. I should go re-install it.
Anyway, I don't know of any other RTS that had the same level of complexity when it came to econ.
Time to chop some wood and hunt some deer!
(ps. sorry for the slight derail)
Sad trailer.
Cancelled, sadly.
- Sierra went defunct.
- Massgate was picked up by Ubisoft.
It was to be World in Conflict: Soviet Assault that would include Original & SA missions
- Which is the expansion the PC saw
Well it's just USA vs USSR, but yeah basically units are the same.
But it's a well-balanced game that all the abilities and tactical aid really makes it diverse and playing different Roles is great.
I was actually quite surprised on how good the presentation for this game was. The still-painting interludes were great and in-game cutscences were far better than a RTS game ever needed to be, and it had some solid voice acting. Just a good game all around.
It's a shame that I keep hearing that the multiplayer community for this game is ballsack, because multi is so good and the Massgate interface is far better than most any other PC multiplayer systems.
edit: so the expansion, worth getting y/n?
You should try the demo to understand. It isnt a RTS in the sense that you are thinking. The game is balanced in the fact that a unit type = rock, another unit = paper and another unit = scissors. The original explanation is an RTS mixed with counterstrike.(I hate that analogy as CS has become a bane to alot of people) Its a really interesting concept and a much much better tactically done game for tournament style play. It relies's on tactics rather then super deep mass x unit, "creeping while the enemies are sleeping" and clicks per second gameplay. This is not to say it is not fast either, matches go in 15-30 minutes usually. And it isnt fast in the sense of ZERG ZERG ZERG aces.
Expansion slides in some USSR missions that can only be played by restarting the Campaign (or new).
However I think it adds multiplayer maps beyond that. But on Steam you can buy the whole thing for like $20, such a steal. I think the Expansion is $20 by it's lonesome.
Best way to describe it.
I think, in the easiest to see example, that the heavy artillery for one side fired a single, big ass shell, while the unit on the other side fired a barrage of shells that individually was less damaging.
It allowed for the single shell to blow the fuck out of whatever you shot, but with the barrage, you could retarget while it was firing to direct a few rounds to other spots in the locale, but you might not blow up whatever you were shooting if you didn't let enough rounds fire off first.
Actually, except for that, and the Fuel Air Bomb Vs the MOAB... um... that's the only differences I remember.S

It makes me kind of sad that Massgate games aren't as popular as they deserve to be. I loved the Ground Control series as well as WiC, neither of which seemed to ever get a big fanbase
Should we form a PA Clan?
Such a good game. Needs desperate sequel.
-=SP3k=- ?
Who else has Massgate names to add to my friends list?
but yes we should form a clan, none of my guys play anymore.
Ideas?

This will be fixed shortly. Such a good game.
I play through the campaign every couple of months or so. It really is a perfect balance of challenging you without frustrating at the same time. It never get's old.
The story was also awesome. Although I didn't really like the "expansion". It was just a map pack and custom scenario thrown in. Albeit from the Russian perspective.
