Hello! My boyfriend has vacation coming soon (august 9 till 21) and we wanted to go somewhere, stay in a hotel, visit museum, touristy-fun stuff. well. that's pretty much what we know. We are located near montreal so I think one way or another is pretty much the same. the tourism website of those town are pretty boring, I never know where/what to look, so I'm asking you.
things we like: Walking around, taking picture, beer drinking, dinosaur, boyfriend has some sort of obsession with war, army, stuff. We were thinking Ottawa because of the museum, but the town itself I hear is really boring. Quebec because of the pretty picture taking and the Vieux-Quebec visiting. And toronto because... I dunno. it's a big city, so it should have interesting stuff to do?
I just heard about this on the radio: http://www.beerfestival.ca/ August 6-9th.
Go to the Distillery District. Interesting stores there, the chocolate place there is very nice (Soma's), and there's a place called Mill's Street Brew Pub that serves food cooked with beer and beer in general. I think they also offer tours and such since they're a local brewer but... I'm not really knowledgeable about alcohol at all so I'll leave someone else to talk about it.
For dinosaurs go to the Royal Ontario Museum. Actually, go there anyway since it's very enjoyable. There's an hour near closing time on one of the weekdays when there's free entrance, but trust me--you'll definitely spend more than an hour there.
I'd also suggest going to the Art Gallery of Ontario, which was recently renovated. I enjoyed myself a lot more than I expected, and there was also a lot more paintings by famous artists than I suspected. There is also a free admission afternoon, so I'd suggest going then to maximize savings. (Warning: both times I've been during those free hours, the lineups were huge-- so go about 15 minutes in advance to line up.)
What else... Go by the CN Tower, though not necessarily up it, since it's ~$23 per person. Walk by the lakeshore, since it's lovely and there are several novel-looking boardwalk things. You can also take a relatively inexpensive ferry over to the Toronto islands for the day.
The St. Lawrence Market is also awesome for fresh and/or luxurious foods, and every time I go there I find something new to try out.

Ottawa won't be boring to you if these are the things you like. Ottawa is perfect! It has the War Museum for your boyfriend and the Museum of Nature for the dinosaur fix. There's the very pretty Byward Market with lots of pubs, terraces and restaurants. There's also the National Art Gallery if you're into that kind of stuff and the Museum of Civilization. There are biking paths along the river for nice, long walks. You could even go on the steam train. And of course, you've got Parliament Hill and the Changing of the Guard, every day at 10 am!
Keep in mind that Ottawa was originally built as four separate cities, which means there's a lot of gaps between areas and transit isn't the best. You will probably want to rent a car or bring one for Ottawa. Toronto, on the other hand, has a robust transit system and many things are in walking distance.

Uh....what?
Ottawa has a fine public transit system unless they're planning on busing from Kanata to Orleans in a timely fashion. The vast majority of Ottawa is all connected just fine by bus, and a car will be a detriment once they get downtown.
Go to the War Museum for sure. It's huge and amazing. Although there are dinosaurs at the Museum of Nature, you should know that it's under some pretty heavy construction (it's always under construction. It's sinking!) and so half the museum is closed until 2010. Still good, but if you can see dinosaurs elsewhere then that might be better.
The Byward Market, Parliament Hill, Sparks Street, The War Memorial, and National Art Gallery are all within walking distance of each other. If you spend any time in Ottawa, you absolutely have to go to the market.
Ottawa has some great bike paths that go along the river if you're into that sort of thing (I think it's beautiful). There are places to do nature walks out by Britannia. There are walking, busing, and boating tours all through downtown that'll give you a good scenic view of the city if you want to be total tourists.
I'm not sure where you're from, but if you don't know, Montreal is very close to Ottawa. About 1.5-2 hours by car. Easy to go to several places in a day. Toronto is at least 5 hours from Ottawa by car, so if you plan on going there it's a bigger trip that can't really be done in a reasonable day. There are still good things to see in Toronto if you feel like making the trip down, but I'll let people from there make that case.
May I suggest Niagara Falls?
It is an amazing romantic spot. TONS of things to do.
Everything from Maid of the Mist, whirlpool jet boat tour(wet and very fun!)
Helicopter ride for $110/person
Magic Show,
Butterfly Conservatory
some great walking trails
You can cross the border to NY and do Cave of the Winds (one of the best things to do at the falls)
Fireworks
etc
Fort Erie is also near by since your boyfriend is interested in the war stuff.
Toronto is only an hour and a half away so you could spend a day there if you want.
For trips, I highly recommend going to tripadvisor.com. You can search for the area you want to go to (so Toronto, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, etc) and see what the biggest tourist attractions are, see what great restaurants are available, hotel reviews, etc.
If you go to Toronto you may also want to check out Medieval Times... Before I went I thought it would be a fairly lame event, but man, it is pretty sweet.

But Québec City and the Vieux Québec are pretty awesome too. And the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto is great! You can't really go wrong with any of these 3 cities.

And if you go there I may see you, as I get to spend 12 days doing orientation at RMC.
