There are two versions of AVG. There is the free version, and there is the free-to-download trial of the paid version. It sounds like you have the latter.

Yes, I know this.
Now why is this the first time AVG free has shown this prompt in the years I've used it?
Is it the "please go register your product" message? Cause thats the only time my AVG ever bothers me and thats as simple as giving them an e-mail address and entering the code they send you.
AVG ran a special on the paid version either last week or the week before if I remember right, I got the same screen offering it. I'm using the fully free version too, not the trial. If 2 or 3 popup screens a year is all I have to deal with to have good, free antivirus I can't complain really.
Was going to make a thread for this, but I may as well jump in here: After AVG decided to dismantle my iTunes installation I decided to uninstall it the fuck off of my computer. Would Avast be a good free alternative, or is there another program I should look into?
According the AVG forums, they were running a promotion for the paid version that was/is supposed to last for about a month or two weeks or something. It made me uninstall AVG and install Avast! which actually seems to run faster than AVG and doesn't have a stupid popup. I've been increasingly unhappy with AVG ever since v8.0 came out.
If you go this route, be sure you run CCleaner after you uninstall AVG but before you install Avast! since AVG leave crap behind in the registry which can screw with other stuff.

i only get a little "sidebar"-style window on the bottom of the window with my avg
avg MAY be paying me to say this,
but even with having to click "close" on a screen every day, at least you're still getting the program free
there are more annoying ways they could try to convince you to upgrade

Avast doesn't nag you to upgrade or advertise in the software that there is a paid version you should upgrade to.
