home automation?

useless4useless4 Registered User regular
My wife has a fear of turning off lights and tvs etc...
Has anyone here done home automation?

I primarily want to control lamps but would love to step up to more things in the future.
An iPhone app to control them would be awesome as well. The server software must be OSX compatible.

    Something like this?

    That's what Google suggested, anyway...

There are a number of high-end, integrated systems (at least one of which does have an iPhone app), but if you're just getting your feet wet with home automation, you might want to try good old X-10, equipment for which is probably on the shelf at your local Radio Shack, and you can get a basic system started for less than the price of a current-gen game.

The Reverend is correct. X-10 controllers are easy to get, cheap, and will give you enough functionality to automate simple things like lights.

Home Automation in general is a veritable clusterfuck, though. A million companies offer it, few of which acknowledge the other's existence, each with their own pros and cons in terms of functionality, cost, and benefit. You could go anywhere from having a Logitech Harmony remote and a few X-10 controllers to stuff like Life|Ware.

Most home automation stuff is a bunch of overpriced shit right now because it's a niche market.
