FireFox Slow on MacBook

MacBook Pro OSX 10.5.7, 4 GB memory
FireFox 3.5.1

I have had the worst problems with FireFox. It lags up when typing. It lags up scrolling down pages. It lags up watching videos.

When typing, I'll press the delete key a few times and the text box freezes. I'll start typing "too fast" and the text box freezes and unfreezes a full 1-2 seconds later. In typing these few sentences, the text box has frozen three times.

I can't watch videos. On YouTube, for instance, the videos freeze every 10 seconds or so. Clicking on the options like "Bookmarks," "FireFox," etc. at the top of the screen cause a full one second delay. FireFox is chugging, chugging, chugging.

I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it - and that worked for about half a day until the problem just suddenly recurred. I don't have any of these problems with Safari.

Activity Monitor shows the following:
33 threads
CPU ranging from 10-80 (typically in the 10-20 range)
Real Memory: 727 MB
Virtual Memory: 1.96 GB Intel

33 threads is way more than any other application.

In comparison, Safari shows:
16 threads
CPU 0.0 (perhaps because I'm typing this in FireFox)
Real Memory: 227.79 MB
Virtual Memory: 1.22 GB Intel

Extensions in Firefox:
Dictionary Lookup 1.5.1
DownloadHelper 4.5
FoxyTunes 3.5.5
Google Toolbar
MediaWrap 0.1.7.3 (couldn't even see Flash content without MediaWrap - wtf)
New Tab Homepage 0.4.1

Memory usage looks higher in FireFox, but I don't know why. Is that the problem? How can I fix FireFox? Thanks in advance.

P.S. - I know many other people are having the same problems.

Did the problem suddenly reoccured after you reinstalled the extensions or before? If after, I'd start with disabling all of your extensions and then enabling them one by one until the problem resurfaces.

The thread you linked is pretty old, I doubt the people there are having the exact same problem as you are.
