So the singleplayer works fine without a hitch, but whenever I try multiplayer I get a black screen, it appears my resolution drops because my arrow gets all big and fuzzy, the screen sits at black for a few seconds, then I'm back at the desktop.
I'm running Windows 7, and I've tried it both with the firewall on and off. Any ideas?
Punkbuster won't be doing anything untill you're actualy in a server, and from what you've said it doesn't sound like you get that far. Are you playing it from cd's, or steam? In both cases what I'd try first is to delete your config_mp.cfg, and force the game to make a new one.
Do you have something plugged into your microphone port?
I know it sounds weird but we struggled at a recent LAN to get COD4 MP working on a friend's computer, and it wasn't until there was something plugged into the microphone port that it would actually load the game past the menu.

The one about the fucking space hairdresser and the cowboy. He's got a tinfoil pal and a pedal bin
Edit: Wait, nevermind. I had the exact issue, but it was on SP only, where the opening video kept trying to load and wouldn't play. Had to rename the video folder to something like "video1" so they wouldn't try loading. Bleh.
It's a known problem with CoD4 multiplayer. It's punkbuster. I've heard that changing the combatibility modes for PnkbstrA.exe and PnkbstrB.exe to Vista works for some people. It hasn't worked for me. YOu just gotta wait until PB releases an update when 7 hits retail. Who knows why they won't release one for the RC.
e: I didn't really read the first post. Heh. I saw people mentioning PB and thought it was the same as my problem.

I know that CoD4 uses Punkbuster and it isnt supported under Windows 7 yet and it wont work.

Plugging in a headset into the microphone port. I have no idea why, but I found the solution while searching online.
And punkbuster works fine, or at least it doesn't interfere with me playing.

I don't know what is up with yours.
