Im going to Canada from the uk for a few weeks im going to Calgary.
Can anyone give me a rough idea of the cost of stuff? Eating out etc. so I know how much money to take.
Also my phone company is going to rip me off if I use my phone there. So I was thinking of just getting a Canadian pay as you go sim card and using that for the time im there. Any ideas of costs or problems with that?
Anything else that anyone thinks is important? Things I should go or see?

Things will cost roughly the same, or rather, the numbers you see will be the same (like if lunch costs £10.00 at home it will probably cost $10.00 Canadian for a comparable lunch), so you're definitely going to be spending less money in Canada than you would buying the same things at home.
someones also told me that in some small towns you cant drink the tap water.
is this true / common?

I haven't heard that about Canada... but I'm not going to say it's 100% false. Some parts can be pretty rural.
I live in alberta, that's fairly accurate. Six to ten bucks will get you a cheap meal, about $20 will get you something fancier. Hotels start at about $60 a night. I don't know your arrangements but if you're spending more than a day or two you'll want to get a rental car, because if you're exploring you pretty much have to drive around.
And I haven't heard of anyone not being able to drink the water, unless there's been a specific incident, and then people are warned and it's a big deal all around. (gets on the news, old people tsk at the state of our government etc)
the water thing. it may just be that where i may be going is a farm (sort of) in the middle of noware.

It may be an issue, but unless you're going to an abandoned farm, the people there should be able to tell you what to do about water. They must be doing something themselves, after all.
I grew up on a farm (sort of) in the middle of nowhere. You'll be drinking well water, which may or may not be softened depending on its mineral content. But unless your host says it's an issue, it's not going to be an issue.
so anyone know about any problems with just picking up a pay as you go sim wilst im there?

Yeah, Canada isn't Mexico, you will be able to drink 99.9% of any tap water you come across, the only time you would need to be worried would be with some well water and then the locals would be able to tell you what to do.

I think they're fairly available in Canada. I know you can buy them pretty much everywhere in the States.
Can you buy one at home? There shouldn't be any issues using it, as long as it's a recognized name (like Visa/Mastercard/etc), and that might be easier.
