Computer Problem

Well, I was flipping the IDE cable between my extra hard drive and my CD drive. I can only have one on at a time, I noticed yesterday that when I plugged the IDE cable into my hard drive nothing would show on my monitor. After unplugging my video card and plugging it back in everything worked fine and I didn't give it another thought. But today when I tried to plug the CD drive in nothing would show on my monitor again and nothing I did fixed it. Recently I've been having the CMOS checksum error alot and I have a 9800 pro video card. My motherboard is an Asus K8V, but I don't think that has to do with it. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.

What do you do? You laugh you know. I'm not saying I don't cry but in between you laugh I realize its silly to take everything so seriously.

After reading that it sound like your mobo might be on its way to dying. My reasoning behind it is that not only are you getting check sum errors but you're also getting issues with hardware that's plugged into it after a configuration change.

You might also want to check and see if you bent any of the pins on the IDE connector, and that it's connected with the right side up.

It's really easy to bend the pins, and some hardware can have the cable plugged in upside down.

Why can you only have one connected at a time? Dual-connector IDE cables are easy to find.

I'm actually wondering where he got his single IDE cable from... unless his main drive is IDE, he's only got 1 IDE port and thus has to switch from extra harddrive to CD drive.

In which case, I suggest an external USB to IDE housing.

But yeah, CMOS checksum errors can be corruption of the BIOS, or, if you computer is a little older (2 years or so), it could be your CMOS battery dying. Simple watch battery, costs less than five bucks.

This man speaks the truth. That error is commonly caused by the CMOS battery.

It seems oddly coincedental, but it truly could be the case.
