does it take time for the meta data within a site to start cropping up on google? all the data seems fine and the site is live, but even when i type the actual web address into google, the site doesn't come up. i've double checked the meta data code with a couple of other sites and it checks out okay.
So now i'm thinking maybe google has like an hourly refresh rate or something before it takes new sites into account? is this the case?
speedy responses would be great

you won't show up until you get crawled. this can take anywhere from minutes to weeks, whenever the spider gets to you.
that said, there are things you can do to hasten that. sign up for a webmaster account for the site. start using google stats. set up a sitemap.xml.
other than that, even with the best meta possible, it may take some time. titles and content are weighted more than metadata. but other non-google engines may (or may not) use them. mostly it comes to "it may not matter, but it doesn't hurt to add them".
hey thanks for the help, i added a sitemap, and looked up exactly how google works, so i'm not worried now. was just a bit paniced cause i'd just put the site up live, and my boss came round to check on it. thought i'd messed up.

Don't get too hung up on it, meta descriptions are a very tiny fraction of the Google algorithm.
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other
