Okay, in just over a week, I will be travelling in a potentially cramped environment to spend about 10 days in and around a recording studio with either 3 or 4 other people. I know that at least 3 of these days will be spent with nothing to do at all, and I'm predicting a fair bit of downtime aside from that too. I plan to take my DS and everything I've got for that, but I'm wondering what kind of non-digital suggestions there might be. Something like a cool CCG we could all learn and get into for the week, maybe a compact board game (I'm considering taking Blood Bowl, but I'm not sure). What've you got?
My mom picked up Lost Cities and I got a chance to play it. It's not really difficult to pick up on the rules and the games aren't very long at all. The only downside is that it's only 2 player.
edit: dammit crowing one, that's the last time I leave a reply screen open to come back to later
Hah!
As for CCGs, you can't get a better deal than Wyvern. I remember playing this back in '93 when it first came out and I was a wee little tyke. Haven't played it since, but the price is right. $4 for a box of starters is awesome. I keep meaning to get 5 boxes "just because."
When I was a little kid, I always pretended I was the hero,' Skip said.
'Fuck yeah, me too. What little kid ever pretended to be part of the lynch-mob?'
I keep wanting to pick this up. I assume it's awesome?
It is. First, the cards are just awesome looking.
Second, if, when you play, each player has to make up a little story about the misery or joy they are about to inflict, it makes it that much better.

There's been some good ideas posted so far, having a look and both Gloom and Cold War are taking my attention at the moment.
Thinking about it some more, I'm wondering if there's some kind of light RPG kind of thing, maybe? I like the idea of a game that can take place over a number of sessions, and something that's a bit free-form. I guess some form of D&D might do, but none of us have ever played anything like that, so it would be a potential disaster.
Paranoia would likely be a good choice in that case. The person running the game will need to read up a bit on the rules, but the players should be as in the dark as possible.

If you have a stable means of leaving the board etc set up, both Runebound and Descent are "Heroquest-esque" games that act like board game versions of D&D in spirit. Though both are known for taking amazing amounts of time (6+ hours for 2-4 player Runebound). Runebound is a rather simple "fight, equip, quest, fight..." set-up, and is rather easy to learn.
I'd stick to the simpler games, myself. I have a love for Cold War, and Gloom has been on my buy-list for ages.
Oh! And Pandemic is by far my favorite game out there. Co-op race against the virus to save humanity! Makes the CDC sound sexy.

Anyone know of anything similar to Warhammer Quest? I woulda said that would be ideal - piece of piss to learn rules for, 1-10 players, randomly generated dungeons, quests and encounters so no need for a GM unless you really get into it and cracking great fun.
Unfortunately it's a we bitty rare and expensive to buy these days.
Baron Munchausen. It's halfway between a drinking game and a pen-and-paper RPG - you all pretend that you're 18th century nobility and take turns regaling tales of your grand adventures.
Right, thanks for all these suggestions chaps, it's a huge help. At the moment, I'm thinking about seeing if the others might be interested in Race for the Galaxy or maybe Pandemic. Personally, I'm quite into sci-fi stuff (hence RftG) but I don't know how much anyone else would be into that.
One more RPG-like game I've been reading up about lately is Inquisitor from Games Workshop. I like a lot that I see about it, although it would probably be a bit short notice for us to all get into it.
Also I've tried looking up Paranoia, but haven't got a clue where to start because it looks like there's about a million different books and expansions for it.

Alternately, pick up a pack of Wizard cards. Good times, suitable for 3-6 people, and very replayable.

I cannot wait to play this with the missus.

If you like D&D, Munchkin is perfect.
Both are funny games of connivery and backstabbery full of pop culture references and generall grabassery.

So is Race for the Galaxy

They are both card games that come with a complete set of cards. No expansions are needed for any of them.
Dominion is more customizable and has cards that interfere with other players.
Race for the galaxy has a more compact box and has less player interaction.
Both are pretty cool games.
YES. I love Pandemic.
Also I agree with Munchkin. Fun, rpg lite card game. Most "game enthusiasts" I've met don't seem to like it though. Not sure why.

you haven't lived until you've spent an entire day playing texas hold 'em with a bunch of rolls of pennies.
Or maybe DS Lites for all? Multi-cart gaming FTW.
And a pack of cards with petty cash involved. You'll do fine.
